“You can’t hate ignorance,” Tommy grumbles. “None of us asked to be born into our families.”

I arch an eyebrow. “Well, get over your newfound love. She’s gone tomorrow.”

“Gone how? You gonna…” Jian trails off.

I shake my head. “Part of the negotiation. As to be expected. Donati doesn’t want her anywhere near me. He wants her away from the life.”

“Ah,” Tommy says. “And what else?”

“He’s gonna give me Alberto’s location soon. He doesn’t want it to be too obvious to his people. They all saw us here tonight. Alberto can’t be murdered tomorrow.”

“You trust this guy?” Jian questions. “Cause we can take him out.”

“I don’t trust anybody, but I’m going to hope he’ll be smart enough to stick to our agreement. Otherwise, everyone will find out who she is and then she’ll really be in danger.”

“Well, let us know when you find out where Alberto is staying.”

“I will. Talk to you later.”

They walk away and I head to the car, taking a deep breath before I get in. Time to ruin things.

Mariella

ChapterTwenty-Seven

He’s different. Something has changed. From the moment we got in the car, he stopped being the affectionate man he was earlier. He’s barely spoken to me, only grunting one or two word responses if I ask a question.

I try not to take it personally. I don’t know what he and that man talked about earlier, but assuming once again it’s mob business, I try to convince myself it has nothing to do with me. He’s just had a hard day at work.

Once we’re inside his place, he goes straight to his mini bar and pours some whiskey in a glass before downing it all in one swallow. He gives himself a refill, his back still to me.

“What the hell happened?” I ask, frustrated with his lack of communication. “You’re obviously mad, but what’s not obvious is the reason why.”

“It’s not really your concern, Mariella.”

“If I’m going to be on the receiving end of your anger, I want to know why.”

He spins around. “I’m not angry. You’d know if you were on the receiving end of it but only briefly. You’d not be alive much longer.”

I blanch, taken off guard momentarily, though his response isn’t all that surprising.

“I’m on the receiving end of your emotion, regardless. You went from being so attentive and damn near nice to being silent and pissy. I just want to communicate with you. You can talk to me, vent, anything.”

He huffs. “We’re not in a relationship, Mariella. I communicate with people who can actually help me, not girls I stick my dick into.”

My gasp is audible. He cuts deep with his words, but I know he can go even deeper with a knife. I have to be careful with what I say, but at the same time, how fucking dare he.

“I don’t even know why I’m surprised,” I say with a sneer. “Of course you’re a fucking asshole. Selfish and full of shit. You’re not even in charge of your family. Khalid is. That’s probably why you haven’t found out who was after me. You’re not nearly as powerful as you think you are. You and your fucking God complex. You’re the only person who thinks so highly of you.”

His nostrils flare as he takes a step toward me, eyes narrowed. “Mariella.” It’s a warning, and one I don’t take.

“Maybe I should go to Khalid. He’d probably get things done in a more efficient manner. He could probably do plenty of things better than you,” I say, knowing I’m going too far. Vicente’s top lip curls slightly. “And I’m not just a girl you stuck your dick into. I’m the woman thatallowedyou the pleasure of being inside me. I’m the one who gave you permission to treat me the way you did, because it’s whatIwanted. Everything we did was only because I wanted it. So, no, you don’t get to degrade me anymore. I’m taking that power away from you.”

He continues taking steps closer to me, and I stand my ground even though every commonsense fiber in my body is screaming at me to run away.

“Look at my girl,” he says with a cruel smile. “Look what I’ve taught you. You’re using your words now.”

“Fuck you,” I spit.
