After a couple minutes, I manage to get to my feet and make my way to the only window. It’s higher than normal, making me wonder if I’m in a basement. I can’t see shit out there.

Footsteps approach the door so I scurry to the corner, pressing my back to the wall. Two men step inside, cloaked in shadows, before one of them flips on the light.

“There she is,” Fred says, amusement in his tone. “I’m guessing you have questions.”

“Yeah. What the fuck is going on?”

He smiles, making his way to the bed where he sits on the edge, staring at me. “It’s really just an unfortunate situation for you. You got caught up with the wrong people and I’m afraid you’re just a pawn.”

“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Why am I continuously being used for your big boy games? Interesting that you all need women, yet you act like we’re incapable of being privy to too much information. I’m over it. Tell me why you did this.”

He looks shocked, looking over to his friend before he starts laughing. “This bitch thinks we owe her answers.” Fred faces me again. “Fortunately for you, I think it’s nice for you to know what got you into this mess. Vicente Moreno. You actually managed to get close to the heartless, cold bastard. I saw you two together at the Roma’s. He couldn't keep his hands or eyes off of you. I’ve seen him with many other women, but never like that. That’s when I knew I had leverage.”

“You don’t—”

He cuts me off. “Let me finish before I get mad. After your boyfriend paid a visit to Donati, coincidentally enough, a few weeks later, the old boss gets murdered. Alberto Orena, dead. I know Moreno had beef with Alberto. It only makes sense that he made a deal with Donati.”

“You’re saying a lot of stuff that I don’t understand,” I say. “I don’t know these people. Why am I involved?”

“Like I said, you got thatpazzoVicente to fall for you.”

I shake my head. “You’re wrong. He was faking it the whole time.Hewas usingme.I’ve hardly even talked to him since that night.”

He pauses to think on that for several seconds before standing up. “Doesn’t matter. He should’ve never been given the go ahead to take out Alberto. The fact that Donati allowed this is damn near blasphemy.”

The other guy in the room finally speaks up. “Hey, let’s talk for a minute.”

Fred sighs, rubbing his head as he and the other one huddle up near the door.

“If Vicente doesn’t care, this means nothing. It’s a potential murder charge for no reason.”

“She’s probably lying, and what’re you thinking? We abducted her and held her hostage. We’re supposed to let her go and think she won’t say anything?”

“Oh. Right.”

“Look, I told you, this is your way in. We get Vicente to admit to what he did, take both him and a recording of his admission to Rossi. He’ll have no choice but to deal with Donati. He can’t remain the boss of this family if he’s letting our enemies kill one of our own. Once Rossi rises to the top, we all move up. I’ll be a capo and you can be an associate, maybe even a soldier.”

They’re whispering is atrocious, though if I’ve learned anything from movies, the bad guys will always talk around you or let you see their face if they don’t plan on keeping you around, so my heart rate picks up speed as I try to think of a way to get myself out of this.

“Fred,” I say softly, my voice cracking. “Please don’t do this. You can let me go and I won’t tell Vicente it was you that took me. He won’t even have to know this whole thing happened. Nobody does.”

He storms toward me, anger etched in every feature. With a quick movement, his palm meets my cheek in a vicious slap that has pain radiating throughout my entire head.

“Don’t let my act fool you, sweetheart. I’m not some friendly neighbor who’s willing to help you. I’m Frederico, a soldier in the Morello family. You are nothing but a stupid girl who spread her legs for someone more powerful than she’ll ever be.”

Tears sting my eyes as the pain in my face continues to throb. “You don’t need me for his confession,” I manage to get out.

“Sure I do. He’ll admit it when I have a knife to your throat.”

A sob breaks free. “Please.”

Fred moves in even closer, his body pressed against mine. His hand touches my thigh, rising higher and higher. “You gonna spread your legs for me too, doll? I’m powerful.”

I squeeze my legs together as much as I can, lifting my face so I can meet his gaze. “You’ll never be as powerful as Vicente. He’s going to cut you down until you’re nothing but blood and bones on the floor.”

Shock registers first before his rage takes over. He grabs my throat and slams my head into the wall, his free hand moving between my legs.

“I can take whatever I want from you and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it. Is that not power?”
