Mila blushed. “I didn’t expect anyone to be up. I was just going to come down and get coffee, then go back to the bedroom.”

“Well, I’m sorry to disappoint.” Cyrus gave Mila a coy smile. They did not untangle from one another, but the moment passed. Cyrus let his fingertips, surprisingly rough for a tech guy, and reminding her of his other side again, run down Mila’s hip and thigh and removed his hand from under the silk. “Are you ready to eat?”

Mila released a shivered breath and nodded. “Let me go grab my robe. I’ll be right back.”

When Mila returned, she had lace underwear firmly in place and a silky flower robe wrapped around her. It helped keep the chill away, but she didn’t want to change out of her pajamas because she liked how Cyrus looked at her.

Mila hoped he imagined everything underneath it.

Cyrus had set the table in the breakfast nook and was waiting for her when she returned. “You’re pretty handy and domestic for a billionaire.” Mila sat at the table next to Cyrus. His chair was close enough to hers that their knees brushed against each other. Mila didn’t know if the electricity rocketing between them would ever go away, but she thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Have you known many billionaires?” Cyrus’s eyes flashed with humor.

“I have helped a few in first class. But, no, I’ve never been privy to the personal lives of someone with your financial status. Just got my info from television shows,” Mila teased back. She helped herself to the breakfast by putting a few strips of bacon on her plate and one large pancake.

As they ate, they fell into a comfortable silence. Then, Mila remembered she was annoyed from last night. She laughed. Cyrus gave her a questioning look. “You’re good, you know that?” Mila said as she stabbed her pancake with her fork.

“What do you mean?”

“I forgot about how upset I was with you last night. The breakfast, the kissing, the cuddles …” Mila perked her eyebrows up. “They didn’t erase the confusion, but it was … is … a nice distraction.”

Cyrus grinned sheepishly and ducked his head a little. At least he has the gall to appear humble right now, Mila thought. She waited for his response.

“You were not the only one annoyed with how last night ended.”

“But it was your choice. Your free will pulled you away.” Mila studied Cyrus, and his body language became twitchy. She wasn’t sure if it had to do with what happened last night or if he wasn’t used to being questioned, but she wasn’t going to let his discomfort be an excuse for not having the talk.

“Yes,” Cyrus responded. He crunched on a piece of bacon. “I am sorry.”

“What was so important?”

“It was work-related, and it is over with. It’s resolved. I can’t say that work won’t pull me away from our relationship, from time to time, if we have one, but I can guarantee I won’t let it interfere again like it did last night.”

Cyrus took Mila’s hand.

“I want to make sure I treat you right. You are my mate, and I don’t want to start on the wrong foot. I know last night was a mistake. Please understand that I wouldn’t have left if it wasn’t necessary.”

The message behind Cyrus’s dark eyes was genuine. Mila’s heart thawed, and she nodded. “Okay. I’ll trust you.” Mila smiled teasingly, and she put another piece of the fluffiest pancake she’d ever eaten in her mouth. “This is delicious,” she said between chews.

“Thanks, I do have to go to work soon. I would love to spend tonight with you. Can you make yourself available?”

Mila pretended to think. “Umm … I guess so.” She laughed. “What are you going to do about your assistant position? I still assume I do not have the job.”

Cyrus chuckled. “I think that would be a conflict of interest, yes. And, while I’m sure you’re amazing at what you do, I think you can probably find another position with someone you aren’t hoping to sleep with.”

“Me hoping to sleep with you? I think it’s the other way around.” Mila squeezed Cyrus’s hand.

“True. But I think we both wanted to jump on each other,” Cyrus mused.

Mila cleared her throat to refocus the conversation. “I’d like to do something to help you find an assistant.”

Cyrus shrugged. “If I can think of anything, I’ll let you know. Right now, it seems like I’ll be back to square one. I’ll have to figure something out soon, though.” Cyrus stood and kissed Mila’s forehead. Then he kissed her lips. “You taste like maple syrup. I like it.”

She smiled at him.

“I have to go, but I will try to be home early.”

Mila’s stomach flipped when she heard the wordhome. She wasn’t sure she was ready to be that close to a man she had just met. Even if everything about it felt right, that kind of commitment would take her a little longer to get used to.
