“Actually, yes. Did you happen to back up the last few projects you worked on for me? I have a lot of the data, but I think I’m missing some things from you.”

“Yes, I did.”

“See? That is why you’re amazing.”

“Can I see your phone?” Miles reached his hand out. Cyrus pulled the phone from his back pocket as Miles placed his whiskey glass on the table.

After a few moments, Miles handed the phone back to Cyrus. “This is an app with everything we’ve worked on. There is an encryption code.” Miles typed it in and showed it to Cyrus. Cyrus, having a good memory, especially for numbers, nodded that he’d memorized it. Miles clicked the button and showed Cyrus a location.

Cyrus cast a sideways glance at Miles. Miles shot Cyrus a look that told him more than he could have ever guessed. Miles was pinpointing the location of the work he had done two nights ago. “There is even a digital backup of everything you’ve done. You just punch in the code, and you’ll be able to access it.”

Cyrus understood even more now how much trouble Miles was in. Guilt ate at his heart for putting him and his family in the situation. Cyrus would figure out a way to make it up to Miles.

“Thank you, Miles. I think we’ll be going now. If you ever need another job, I’d love for you to come back and work for me.”

“I’m going to try something different for now. Give me some new challenges.” Cyrus clapped Miles on the back again and pulled him in for a hug. “I wish I could come back,” Miles whispered.

“I understand,” Cyrus responded. “Someone attacked us last night. Your family’s safety is more important. I think it’s too late for me to stop now.”

“I wish you would just let it go. These people are somehow even more powerful than you.”

They pulled away from the hug, and Miles smiled. He took Mila’s hand. “Congratulations on finding each other. It was one of the best times of my life when I found Linda.”

“It’s definitely been an adventure.” Mila laughed, although her eyes were strained. Cyrus could tell that the influx of danger had worn her down.

“Good luck, old friend. I hope to see you both again soon.” Miles stepped back from the door as Cyrus and Mila exited.

“I hope that is possible, too,” Cyrus said as Miles closed the door.

He led Mila back to the car. Neither said anything until they were on the road again.

NINETEEN

MILA

On the way home from meeting Miles, her mind whirled with a million thoughts.

Who was behind these threats? What did they want? Why not approach Cyrus head-on

instead of going after Miles and his family?

Cowards, that’s what they were. Determination rose in her chest. She wanted justice for all the despicable things these people had done. And maybe the best revenge was to win the grand prize.

“You know,” she said, breaking the silence in the car, “I think we should fly to the Arctic and see if all your research has paid off.”

His head swiveled on his shoulders so fast she thought it might spin all the way around. His brows drew down, and he scowled.

She raised her hands. “I know you’re afraid of me getting hurt. You made that abundantly clear. But should I remind you that I’m the mate of a polar bear? If I were some weakling who cowered and ran from her shadow, do you think the Fates would’ve matched us up?”

The grin growing on his face encouraged her to go on.

“I mean, really. As a flight attendant, I’m trained in self-defense, subduing violent passengers, and all kinds of first aid. I can shove these size nine flats up anyone’s ass who messes with me.”

Cyrus threw his head back with a loud laugh. Now that’s what she wanted to hear.

“You got it,” he replied. “Let’s get home, pack some stuff, and get to the airport. With all my data back, I know exactly where I want to go.”

“And where’s that?” she asked.
