Mila remembered the fear in Miles’s eyes. The hesitancy at saying anything. And then there was his warning, these men are more dangerous than you know. Whoever was protecting this artifact didn’t have limits. They’d already killed to protect their secret, and she didn’t think it was their first time. They also knew about Cyrus. They knew he was searching for answers, which was why they targeted Miles. But didn’t that also mean that his parents found something worth going after?

“What do you know about the men Miles spoke about, the ones who threatened him?”

His face darkened. “Nothing except for the fact that they’re dangerous.” He shrugged.

“Is there anyone who might have expressed their dislike for your parents or even for you? Have you ever gotten any threats?”

“No. Nothing. This thing with Miles was the first encounter I’m aware of. If my parents did have enemies, they did too good of a job of shielding me from them, and anything they might have known all disappeared along with their bodies. They didn’t trust many people, so they took all of their work with them.”

“Shit. Okay, so we’re going in blind.”

“Not exactly. We know someone is out there. We know they’re hiding something, and we know that they’re the missing piece to finding out what actually happened.”

A silence passed between them. The weight of what they were doing was sinking in. This could go a million ways. They were up against an unknown enemy, and this unknown force didn’t want to scare them. It wanted them gone. It wanted them dead!

The truth was always worth the risk.

“So what happens when we land?” she asked.

He spoke slowly as if he was speaking and thinking the words simultaneously. “We keep our eyes and ears open. Hopefully, we find their final resting place.”

Mila nodded. “What about the men?”

“We avoid them if we can,” he said simply.

Mila’s heart hit the wall of her ribs. If. Which meant he didn’t think they could. She didn’t either, but somehow hearing Cyrus confirm it made it more real.

It also made her more determined.

These killers wouldn’t get away with whatever they were trying to hide.

“And if we can’t?”

“I’ll finally know who was responsible.” His gaze bore into hers. “And once I know, we do whatever it takes to survive.”

TWENTY

CYRUS

The Arctic was cold.

Cyrus reveled in the chilled air whipping through his hair and over his skin. Because of his polar bear’s powers, he wasn’t even susceptible to frostbite. It was one of the many things he loved.

But Mila was not a shifter. She was human through and through. Her shaking, trembling body worried Cyrus. Although he’d planned for her to be well buttoned up, he hadn’t considered just how fragile she would be in this weather.

Not that it would stop Mila. Nor did she complain about it. But Cyrus made a mental note to remember how humanity differed from shifters. It would be something he would connect with from now on.

They rented a room in one of the larger cities along the coastline after they had stopped at one of the major clothing stores and purchased all the gear and warm accessories they would need.

“How long do you think it will take for us to get to the cave?” Mila’s hands wrapped around a metal mug of hot tea. Even the room they stayed in couldn’t keep her at a normal temperature.

Cyrus rolled out a map on the small hotel room table.

He pointed to the spot where they were and crossed it off with a red X. “We are here. The journey shouldn’t take too long. We should reach there by nightfall if we start out early and keep a good pace.” He drew a line from the first red X to the location they were going to and added another red X on the targeted area. “We will have to camp out in the cave and then head back the next morning.”

Mila released an exaggerated shiver and laughed. “Sounds exciting. What will we be doing once we get there?”

“Have you ever gone spelunking?”
