She nodded, sighing deeply. She watched him drive, clutching the steering wheel with his left hand while his right rested on her thigh. His eyes were glued to the road, and he looked relaxed.

She observed the rural view. She liked the scenery. It was different from all the city lights.

After they pulled up to her apartment, they headed upstairs to pack what they needed. She loaded clothes and all her toiletry and paused when her eye caught the silver cases on her bed. She placed her hands on her hips and stared at them.

While she knew that Strap probably wasn't used to them, nor would he like them, she wanted to take them. So, she flipped open one of the lids.

"What are you doing?" Strap came up behind her, his arms crossed. "I thought I said we weren't going to need that stuff?"

She nodded, running her hands over the items. "I don't care. I do."

He narrowed his eyes at her. "We don't need them. You have me. Honestly, it's just going to weigh you down, and it's a waste of space."

"Your ass is a waste of space," she grumbled, grabbing the camera and looking it over.

"Really? You still have to make smart-ass comments? I thought we were past that."

She looked over my shoulder, glaring at him. "I will nevernothave something smart to say to you."

He shook his head and rubbed a hand down his face. "Mickey, we don't have to mess around. We need to hit the road soon."

"I'm aware." She grabbed the drone and placed it next to the camera.

"Then why are you still grabbing things out of the silver boxes?" he asked, waving his hand.

She clicked her tongue. "Just because you don't want them doesn't mean that we aren't going to have them. We will probably need them. I’d rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them."

He sighed, seemingly giving up on telling her otherwise. She packed her items into her bag along with a few other things and followed Strap out to the living room. She ran through her bag once more, making sure she had everything she needed. When she decided she did, they headed down to his car.

They threw everything into the back and got into the car. She reclined her seat, getting herself comfortable as Strap hit the open road. She looked at the sign that read Valencia.

She was suddenly eager. She'd never been that far south in Spain. While she knew they weren't there for fun, she couldn't calm her heart.

"Have you ever been there?" she asked, looking at him. He held the steering wheel with one hand and took a sip of water with the other.

"A few times. Your father took me."

She nodded with a smile. "You must have been close to him?"

He looked at her for a moment before he swallowed. He sat quietly for a couple of minutes, and she didn't think he was going to answer her. She sighed, planning to leave it alone.

"I didn't have a good childhood. I wasn't treated like anything special. It was far from it," he said, his jaw clenching slightly. "Your father took me in, and my entire world changed."

She looked at him, seeing that every word he said he meant. She saw a half smile on his face and the faraway look in his eyes.

"How did you meet?" She'd read it in her father's journals, but she never got his version of how they knew each other.

He chuckled. "I was a pocket picker. It was the only way I could get money to find food. I was pretty good at it. I'd been doing it for years."

"Years?"

He nodded.

"Wait a second Where were your parents?"

"One story at a time," he chirped. "Your father happened to be my next victim. But his hand caught mine before I even got close."

"He knew?" she asked, shocked.
