Strap pulled her close with one arm. She clung to his body.

He rode her into an orgasm that had her coming over and then over again. Her screams echoed through the forest and met them again as Strap roared through his climax.

With a final thrust, they separated from one another. They were slick with sweat and naked on top of a car. Laughter burst out of each of them.

“I hope no one heard us,” Mickey said, knowing he sounded just like the panther he was at the end.

Strap kissed the tip of her nose. “I’m sure they did but had no idea what it was.”

Strap hugged Mickey close. She shuddered and closed her eyes. “You smell so good.” The clean, fresh scent of Strap coaxed her inside a bubble. Her head fogged over. Making her want to stay in the warmth of his arms.

She studied Strap’s features as he held her. His blonde hair was mussed, and his eyes were marbled with jade and mossy green.

An unfamiliar pull toward him linked around her heart. She could only assume it was the magic of the mating bond, but did that mean she was supposed to succumb to him?

Strap brushed a strand of hair off her cheek.

Mickey leaned into the palm of his hand and closed her eyes as his thumb ran the length of her face. His breath skimmed across her neck. She opened her eyes to see how close his face was to hers and lifted her lips to meet his.

The kiss was subtle. Tender. Soft. Loss, sadness, and caring overtook her as Mickey pressed closer to Strap’s nakedness. If it was a blanket, she wanted to be covered in it. Just for this moment.

It wouldn’t last.

And with that thought, reality hemorrhaged the fragile understanding between Strap and Mickey.

Strap blinked and looked away.

Mickey scooted toward the edge of the car’s hood. She cleared her throat as Strap helped her down.

She grabbed her shoes and clothes and shimmied into them. She snatched the drone and walked to the passenger side of the car. Her refusal to think about what had just happened was more about self-preservation than anything, but Mickey wasn’t ready to investigate those thoughts yet. Instead, she pulled up the drone pictures and began studying them.

When the driver’s side door opened, and Strap slid into the seat, Mickey barely registered that he’d thrown on a pair of jeans and a holey blue tee shirt. Her pulse picked up as his fresh, clean scent coasted to her.

Mickey shook away the shivers running down her spine. And held out the drone.

“If you look here, you can see how many guards there are at each station … or what seems to be their stations.” Mickey froze an image and zoomed in on a cluster of three guards. “Here, this looks like the most heavily guarded area.”

Mickey looked up to see that Strap’s gaze was out the windshield.

“Are you paying attention?” She poked him in the arm. He turned to her with an annoyed look.

“Yeah. I know what is going on.” His voice was gruff, and his features clearly showed he was still concerned with her taking part in the theft.

Mickey chose to ignore those. Whatever he felt right now wasn’t her concern. Instead, she needed to focus on her end goal. Just because she was falling for a guy didn’t mean she had to let it change her entire life.

No, she told herself.I’ll worry about that tomorrow…or when the job is done.

“We will need a place to stay for a few days,” he grumbled.

Strap started the car and shifted the stick into first gear. “I saw a place that looked vacant.” He spun the wheel, and the vehicle fish-tailed in the forest ground. Soon they were driving on the street toward the cliffside.

They pulled off the road to what appeared to be an abandoned bungalow. “Wait.” Mickey stopped Strap from getting out of the car. “Let me make a call first.”

While Mickey talked on the phone, she observed Strap getting irritated. He drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, threw a few huge sighs, and crossed his arms over his chest. After a few more moments of Strap’s annoyed pouting, Mickey got off the phone.

“We have a reservation.”

“What do you mean?” Strap searched Mickey’s face. His confusion was plain.
