Mickey’s eyes widened, and her mouth started to form words, but Strap cut her off. “It’s a fake for show. Maybe we can use it for our story?”

He held out his hand for hers, and she gave it to him. Sliding the ring on her finger, he couldn’t help but notice her disappointment. Why is she so upset? They got out of the car, and her sadness faded, replaced with a silly face. She reached out and grabbed his hand.

Opening the front door for her, they walked into the firm. “We’re here to find someone who will build a house for us.” Strap said, and his arm snaked around Mickey’s waist. Claws and wings battered under his skin at the contact, but he ignored it.

His mate leaned against him, and from the corner of his eye, he could see her cute little smile lighting up. The receptionist nodded happily and typed on her keyboard. She handed them a clipboard and pointed to a few waiting room seats.

“Fill these out, and I’ll find someone for you to consult with.” After the two walked away, Strap heard Mickey’s soft voice speaking to him.

“Why didn’t you tell me this was the plan? It’s perfect, of course, but I could have prepared if you had told me.” He only chuckled in reply and pushed the clipboard in between them. They came up with a bunch of fake information and put down a burner phone number that Mickey had.

When the receptionist came back, she took the clipboard from the two and looked through all the information.

“We have an opening with Mr. Luiz. He’s in the third room on the left,” the petite receptionist said, still reading through all the information.

Mickey led the way to the office, and with a few soft rapson the door, a pudgy, greasy-looking man welcomed them into his office.

The office was all black and white with golden handles on everything. It was covered in paperwork and cups of coffee. With a slow look up and down the man, it was clear he probably had never drawn a house in his life.

The two of them took their seats in front of the desk, and with a slow waddle, the man sat in his plush gold chair.

“So, I hear you two want to build a house?” he started, his voice a slow drawl. Mickey nodded over-enthusiastically, already getting into her role.

“Ever since our engagement, my wife has been over the moon with wanting to get started on our home.” Strap said. The pull he felt at the corners of his mouth was all because he was thinking about his mate as his wife.

Mickey wasted no time picking up the conversation lull with her own feigned excitement. She pulled her hand away from resting on Strap’s arm and flashed her ring. It was unbelievably big and ugly as all sin, but it looked real.

Mr. Luiz’s eyes nearly bulged out of his head at the sight. With a grin, he started to explain all the basic information about building a house. He finished with a question.

“What kind of house do you two want to build?” Mickey’s eyes widened, and she clapped her hands together. She seemed like a whole other woman.Maybe she should be an actress.

“Well, I saw this gorgeous coral-colored house on a cliff outside town. I want something like that, but on the beachside. Do you have any blueprints for one like that?”

The man chuckled before standing. “Actually, I have those exact ones right here. It’s a popular design. Very open concept with lots of room for family growth. Are you two having kids? Or have you already?”

Mickey nodded happily, starting to spew out information even he wouldn’t have been able to make up on the spot.

“I want at least two. The more, the better. I’ve always wanted a big family. Both of us are going to be involved heavily in their lives. I’ve always dreamed of being a big soccer mom, carpooling to school, and being a part of the PTA.” She clapped her hands together.

Does she really want that?Strap’s mind turned over all her words. She was so specific that there was no way she could have made it up out of nowhere.

Strap would give her that if she wanted it. His animals tore at him in agreement. But she would have to stop being a thief.Would she even want to stop? There was a small ache in his chest that so desperately wanted it to be true.

The architect was eating it up, though. He was incredibly excited. Turning his monitor toward them, Strap saw a complete blueprint of the house.

“Now, this one is custom, so you wouldn’t be able to have one exactly like it.” He started, and there was a fake disappointment in Mickey’s frown. She nodded acceptingly as he started to explain all the features they could add.

“This balcony has floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the second-floor pool. It’s a decent touch, but on a beachfront, I would skip the pool for a good deck.” Strap’s mind wandered with boredom as he explained, but Mickey was all ears. She was scanning the whole map, and when the man switched floors, she was nodding and starting all over.

The thought landed in Strap’s lap before he realized what his incredibly smart mate had done. Mickey successfully got him to talk about every entry point and hidden feature of the house they were going to break into. The guy even pointed out where there were security issues they could redesign. She was more intelligent than he ever could have imagined.

She must have gotten it from her father. He was incredibly smart, able to get whatever he wanted just by talking.

Mickey squeezed his hand, and she glanced at him. It pulled Strap out of his thoughts, and he smiled at her. Her eyes looked so full of love he could stare into them forever.I’m so fucked. He was head over heels for her, and there was no going back.

The sight of Mr. Luiz checking his watch made him glance at his own. “Darling, I think it’s time we leave. We have your sister’s dinner tonight.” Strap gently nudged his fake wife, and the man cleared his throat.

“We hope to get your business with our firm. Cassandra at the front will take the money for our consultation.” He led them out, and after a quick payment, they were back outside of the firm.
