In Strap’s mind, he didn’t care. No one was going to report a naked man chilling on the top of the building. That sounded too bewildering to take seriously.

If no one noticed his two-hundred-pound black cat or his bird with the nine-foot wingspan, then his human form was definitely in the clear … for now.

“Hello, General Nydia. Nice to speak to you at this time of day.”

“Good day, Strap. How’s my favorite little shifter doing?”

Strap raised a brow, pressing his phone against his shoulder and ear while he made sure his hands shifted back to their normal human form correctly. “I’m not little, and I’m not your favorite, so I don’t get the flattery.”

General Nydia sighed. “I’m trying to be nice to you. I want an update. According to your GPS, you made it all the way to Barcelona. Care to explain how that happened?”

At that moment, his throat went dry.Shit. Strap had officially diverted from his mission, but there was no way in hell he was going to let General Nydia know about that.

That meant going back to Supermax. He’d rather die than let that happen again.

“Uh, I think I found a lead. On Mick.” Strap cleared his throat. “Apparently, he lives in Spain as of late, so I’m trying to locate where his new place is. Don’t worry. I don’t plan on losing him.”

“That’s good to hear. I was afraid that you lost sight of the mission.” A terse laugh resounded on the other line, one that made Strap press his lips together tightly. “You’ve still got your wits about you, right? You’re not the useless, bumbling idiot you used to be.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Strap replied, narrowing his eyes as he noticed movement coming from his mate’s apartment across the way. “I promise that I’ll let you know if I find more information on Mick. He’s a slippery bastard, as you probably already know.”

“Yes, I do. That’s why I needed someone like you on the hunt for him. You would know his tricks better than anyone else.”

For a moment, Strap wanted to test his luck and ask about her sudden interest in Mick. However, he remembered the lies he had just told and the predicament he was currently in. Perhaps, it wasn’t the best time to push the limits.

The man swallowed thickly, running his hand along his neck.

“Well, I’ll try not to fail you.”

“You already know the consequences if you get soft on me,” she said, an icy undercut to her words. “I don’t want to hear about a reconciliation between you and Mick. Am I clear?”

“Trust me, I want that son of a bitch in custody as much as you do,” Strap said, enough anger in his voice to make General Nydia let out an amused chuckle. “I won’t let you down. Is it cool if I hang up now? I’m following this lead closely.”

“Go ahead, Strap. Sorry if I interrupted something important. I’ll be seeing you soon.”

He hung up the line without replying.

With a glance toward the parking lot, he saw his mate’s car flash to life. She pulled out of the space and made her way to the exit of the lot, where she merged into traffic and drove away.

Let me out, his condor hollered. We have to follow her.

Strap scoffed, rolling his eyes. Sometimes, he wanted to stick a sock into his condor’s mouth, but that would do nothing to halt the thoughts that trickled in from the animal.

You can’t get rid of me that easily, the bird taunted.Because I’m nice, I’m going to ask again. Why aren’t we following our mate? What if she puts herself in danger?

That’s none of my business right now. What’s important is that we get the knife and put it back, and maybe nobody will even know it was taken. And now that she’s gone, we have our chance to do it.

Aww. His panther rumbled. You’ve traveled all this way just to be with her again. Leave the knife for another time. Right now, we should learn more about her. We don’t even know her name.

The condor in him agreed. She’s beautiful, though. Wonderful eyes. They feel awfully familiar, though. Wouldn’t you agree?

Clenching his jaw, Strap had enough of his animals getting in the way of his mission. They were the main ones who convinced him to follow his mate to Barcelona. Their logic was flawed with a plethora of holes, stating that his mate would somehow be the key that led him to Mick.

After a fine comb of the surroundings, Strap knew that it was all bullshit. Mick wasn’t here. Besides, Mick didn’t like spending too much time in Spain, so it didn’t make sense to finally find the old man in one of its greatest cities. He never enjoyed the ambiance. He used to complain about everything, from the culture to the food.

Stupid bastard,Strap thought.Paella is a good dish. He was being a hater for no reason.

Strap!his condor stood at full attention. Our mate is getting away. We need to follow her. What if she leads us to Mick? What if she’s in cahoots with Mick and working with him?
