“How am I being a dick?”
“No,him,” said Niles in a hard voice.
She drew back.
“Look, he’s always macking on girls—”
“Macking on?”
“You know what I mean.”
“He’s allowed to do that, though. He never made me any sort of promises—”
“Yeah, okay,” said Niles. “Okay. But it becomes a problem when you try to do the same thing—not even the same thing, because it’s just me—and then he freaks out.”
“I fuck guys,” she protested.
Okay, Niles didn’t like that.
“I do,” she said. “Not all the time, but regularly enough. You’re different, and he can tell.”
Okay, Niles maybe actually did like that after all. His shoulders sagged. “I’m different?”
She pressed close to him and took both of her hands in his. “If it was… would you be mine? Only mine?”
“I mean, what are you…?”
“If we did a thing together, would you want it to be monogamous?”
“Obviously.” Obviously? Wait, this was the second date. She was the perfect woman, and it was the perfect situation, and he was walking it back?
“Okay,” she said, nodding. “I need to talk to him, then.”
He drew back. “Wait, you’re going to…”
“I don’t know,” she said. “That’s crazy, right? We don’t know each other.”
He grabbed her hands again. “It’s crazy, but I don’t care. Yeah, damn it, I’m yours, only yours. Be mine. Only mine.Yes.”
She smiled.
He kissed her.
She pressed her entire body into his, and they kissed there, right in front of the windows, where anyone on the street walking by could see.
“YOU KNOW, HEgrew up here,” Tommy was saying. He was smoking a cigarette and sitting on the swing in the back of the Meck. It was like a porch swing, with arms and a back, and it was hanging from the bough of a very large, very old tree.
Dahlia sat down next to him. “You want to talk about this at the Meck? Not at home?”
“What is this talk, Dahlia?” said Tommy, looking her over. “This is us breaking up?”
“We’re not together,” she said softly. “So, no, I guess it’s just maybe us not fucking anymore.”
“Okay,” he said.
It was quiet.
“Can I have a cigarette?” she said finally.
