“Because I’m not,” she whispered.

“You’re perfect,” he said. “You’re hot. You’re explosively hot.”

She liked him saying that. She watched as he pulled things out of the bags to put in the fridge.

“I wouldn’t do that to you,” he said.

“I don’t have a sister,” she said, shrugging.

“Okay, well, that’s good, then,” he said, laughing into the fridge. “You’re probably wondering what you’re getting yourself into. I made you blow up your whole life for me, and then you’re finding out what I am…”

“It doesn’t feel like that, no,” she said. “We all have faults. Everyone does. And when you care about someone, you accept those faults.”

He raised up from the refrigerator and eyed her. “Any faults? All faults?”

“When you care about someone,” she said.

“Shouldn’t we try to improve?”

“Sure,” she said. “But it’s not up tometo make people improve.”

He nodded. “Yeah, I get you.” He shut the fridge door. “I’ll improve on my own. I promise you.”

“I don’t…” She shook her head. “I don’t think that way about you at all.”

“It’s fine,” he said. “Everyone thinks like that about me.”

“Well, I won’t,” she said firmly. “I’m on your side, Niles. That’s my deal with you.”

He let out a breath. “Fuck.”

She smiled at him.

Suddenly, she was in his arms and his snake tail was wrapped around her, and she was laughing up at him, feeling happy and safe and cherished. Tommy never made her feel like this, never made her feel special. He accepted her, sure, and they had their connection, but she’d never felt anything like this. She cupped Niles’s face with her hands. “Kiss me.”

He did.

They kissed for a while.

When they pulled away, she felt languid and loose and she was smiling and sighing.

“So, then, woman,” he drawled, “what are you cooking for me?”

She laughed.

“Get in the kitchen,” he said, waggling his eyebrows.

“Um, we’re already in the kitchen.”

“Well, that’s handy, because that’s where you belong.”

She snorted.

“I mean, I think I’m a better cook than you, but I guess I’ll let you try to impress me.”

“Youarea better cook than me,” she said. “You’re kind of amazing. Why I thought I should cook for you, I don’t know, actually. I was trying to think of something nice I could do for you, and I couldn’t think of anything.”

“Uh, being here is good. Kissing me is good. Being on my side isreallygood.”
