“So much for always being on my side,” she muttered.

“Hey, I’m saying thisbecauseI’m on your side,” he said. “You’re not being on your own side, and someone needs to be there, and so here I am, trusting you because I know you. I know you’re a good person.”

“I’m not, though.” Her lower lip trembled. “Can you pretend we never talked about this?” And now, she was crawling across the loft, toward the ladder.

“Hey, where are you going?” he said.

“I don’t know,” she said. “Look, we’re in this thing now, and I’m here every night, and it’s probably too fast.”

“I think it’s perfect,” he said. “Are you leaving?”

“I think I should sleep somewhere else tonight.”

He fumbled around and got his phone. “It is nearly midnight, Dahlia, and you’re not walking all the way back to town in the dark.”

“I can walk anywhere I want on my own,” she said, glaring at him. “I can take care of myself.”

“If you really need to leave, I’m driving you.”

“No, you’re not.” She scurried down the ladder. “Just stop it.”

He peered down at her before following her down to the bottom floor. “Hey, look, this is our first fight, and how we deal with it is going to set the tone for everything that comes after. But if you think I’m not going to try to keep my girlfriend safe, even if I’m angry with her, you’re insane.”

“Angry with me?” she said. “Why are you angry?”

“Because you’re leaving and not talking this out,” he said.

“I don’t like conflict!” she yelled. All of her clothes were down here, because they’d undressed earlier here before climbing into the loft. She shrugged into her shirt.

“No one likes conflict,” he said. “If you run from it, it doesn’t go away though. Better to just face it and get through it.”

“Get through it? As if that ever happens.”

“Conflicts can be resolved,” he said.

“I don’t know if they can,” she said, stepping into her jeans. “Did you just say ‘girlfriend’?”

“Uh… is that bad?”

“You want it to be official like that?”

“Obviously. I mean, I know it’s soon, but it’s good. We fit together really well, and I’m falling for you, and yeah, I want it official.”

She was kissing him.

He was surprised, and he wound his arms around her and tugged her close.

She pulled away just as quickly. “Okay. Official, then. You’re my boyfriend. And I guess you can drive me back to my place.”

He let out a laugh. “Uh, okay. Just stay?”

“I can’t,” she said. “If I stay, you’ll make me talk about it.”

He sighed.

“I’ll think about it, okay?”

“About what?”
