“Something like that.”

I could hear the laughter in Bennett’s voice.Glad this amuses him.

“Come in.” Stephanie stepped back to let him in just as I approached.

His eyes locked on mine as he smiled at me. While his mouth was all happy innocence, his eyes told another story—they said,I want to take you upstairs and go all lumberjack on your ass.

Gah!I was spending too much time with my sister, because what the hell did that even mean? I found I didn’t care as long as it meant getting naked with Bennett.

He held up a bag. “I have doughnuts, courtesy of Carolina Banks Elementary School.”

I blinked. “Oh. Okay.” I hadn’t expected him to show up at all, much less with pastries from the local elementary school.

“Last chance for yoga,” Stephanie said in a singsong. “That’s okay.” She grinned wickedly. “I’m sure you’ll manage some stretching and exercising of your own.”

My cheeks burned. Pleased with herself, Steph flounced up the stairs.

Bennett waited until she’d closed her bedroom door behind her. “I guess she knows I stayed last night.”

“You think? It was probably obvious with your truck in the driveway.”

He scratched the back of his neck. “Yeah, I wasn’t exactly thinking straight last night.”

Oh God. Here it comes. At least he had the decency to come talk to me instead of me finding him stretching his secretary out on his bar.

He doesn’t even have a secretary.Obviously, I hadn’t worked through my feelings about walking in on Reg like that.

Bennett must have noticed my stricken expression, because he put the bag of doughnuts on the side table and reached for me. Then he abruptly stepped back and shoved his hands into his pockets. “I don’t regret it. It wasn’t a mistake.”

Closing my eyes, I let the words wash over me, and my lips curled into a small smile. Before I could open my eyes, Bennett had his arms around me.

He put his thumb under my chin and lifted my face so I was forced to look at him. “You don’t regret it, either. For a minute there, I wasn’t sure.”

I went up onto my toes and kissed him gently. “Mmm… you taste like sugar.”

“I might have had two, okay, three… I mean,fourdoughnuts.”

“At the elementary school?” I still hadn’t put all the pieces together.

He took my hand and led me to the kitchen. “Dads and Doughnuts with Sophia. In case you weren’t aware, I’m officially the best uncle ever. I have the documentation to prove it.”

I pictured Bennett’s tall frame shoved under a tiny elementary school desk with his niece beside him, and my heart melted. “You have a lot of competition for that title.”

Pulling a doughnut out of the bag and offering it to me, he grinned. “They’re no match for me. I definitely plan to lord this over all their heads.”

“I’d expect nothing less. How’s Paul? I should have asked yesterday, but I was… uh… distracted.”

“I would have been a little insulted if you’d started asking about my stepfather while I had you naked.” He picked up my abandoned doughnut and held it up to my lips so I could take a bite. “Sweets for my sweet.”

I laughed, nearly choking on the bite I’d just taken. “That was so cheesy.”

He grinned. “Yeah. I don’t know if it fits, anyway.”

I nodded. “I’m not very sweet.”

“No, you’re determined and thoughtful and kind,” he said, making my cheeks warm with pleasure. Then he had to go ruin it. “And hot as fuck.”

I laughed. “Are you sure you’re not married, Mr. Ramsey? With lines like those, you must have a queue of ladies around the block.”
