“No, to answer your question. I’ve never been married, and I don’t have children. That’s not something you want, is it?”

Knowing it was frowned upon to be on my phone during our date, I pulled it out anyway, hoping he found it extremely rude, as rude as his presumption that I wasn’t interested in my happily ever after.

Ryan: Help! SOS!

To my great relief,he answered right away.

Cary: On my way. Sit tight, Termite.

A moment later,Carson delivered our entrees. I tried to catch his eyes, to plead with him to save me, but he was focused on my date.

“Anything else, sir?”

“Yes, I ordered a loaded baked potato, not a sweet potato.”

“I’m sorry, sir. My mistake. I’ll bring you a potato right away.” Carson winked at me again before leaving, and I had the feeling he was trying to piss my date off on purpose. At this point, I was rooting for him. With any luck, William would walk out in a snit and leave me be.

Carson returned with the potato, and as William unwrapped it, the steam wafting into his pinched face, Carson placed another drink in front of me. A duplicate of the one I was already enjoying. I looked at him curiously, and he explained, “Compliments of the gentleman at the bar.” I looked behind him to see Carlisle waving at me, a wicked smile teasing his lips.

I waved back. “Please tell him thank you.” I lifted the fresh drink up in salute before bringing it to my lips. William scowled, not appreciating the attention I was receiving from another man.

When Carson walked away, he asked, “Was that necessary? He can clearly see you are on a date. That’s beyond rude, and even ruder of you to accept. I guess you are too young to realize your blunder.”

Oh no, asshole. I realized crystal clear how rude it was, and how rude you were. I took another healthy sip and dug into my Prime Rib with relish, loving that I finally had the upper hand. This date was on its way out the door, and I couldn't wait to wave him goodbye.

We ate in relative silence as we listened to the singer, and I was grateful for the reprieve. As soon as we finished and laid our utensils down, Carson returned with the check and to clear our plates away, trying his best to hurry us along. He returned a minute later and retrieved the black checkbook. When he came back, he looked apologetic.

“I’m sorry, sir. Your card was declined. Do you have another form of payment?” It was the ultimate embarrassment, and William huffed.

“Declined? I don’t see how.” He fished for another credit card, handing it over angrily. “Here. Try this one.” Carson disappeared, and William looked sheepish. “I can’t imagine why it was declined. When we return to your place, I’d like to come inside and see your home. Maybe we can watch a movie together or something.”

The “or something”had me cringing again. No thanks. I was spared from having to reply as Carson returned and handed the black book to William. He laid his hand on my arm.

“Sir, you have a phone call at the bar.”

Was he serious? I couldn’t imagine who would be calling me. Wouldn’t they just call my cell phone? I shrugged and excused myself, following him to the bar.

“Who’s on the phone?”

Carson laughed, playfully shoving my shoulder. “No one, Boytoy. I’m trying to save you from him taking you home. Tell him it’s your mom, and she’s on her way here and wants you to stay and have drinks with her.”

“Oh. Do you think he’ll believe that? What if he insists on staying?”

“Sell it, Ryan. Refuse him. There’s no way in hell I’m letting you leave with Old Man Fancy Pants.”

I snickered at his description of my date. And for the first time this evening, I felt safe. And relaxed. I drew a deep breath and shook my head before turning on my heel and rejoining William. When I sat back down, I explained to him about my mom, and of course, he offered to stay. I politely but firmly declined his invitation, and he tried again.

“But that picture you sent me before our date. I thought we were on the same page tonight.”

Carson, that rat! He told me to send that picture and now William thought I wanted to have sex with him. Ugh!

“I’m sorry things didn’t work out that way. Thank you for taking me out. Dinner was lovely.”

I stood and made my way over to the bar to busy myself while waiting for William to leave. He stopped at the bar and leaned in to kiss my cheek. His breath smelled of the liquor he drank, sour and ripe.

“Goodnight, Ryan. Maybe I’ll call you again soon.”

God, I hoped not! I definitely didn’t do Daddies.
