He laughed before his lips found my neck, nuzzling my skin like a snack. “Nobody from our generation likes your taste in music, Songbird. He clearly lied. What else?”

A flash of anger shot up my spine, stiffening it. “He bakes and likes all the same movies I do,” I challenged.

“Doubtful. Anything else?”

Carson’s lips tickled the shell of my ear, his warm breath sending shivers straight down to my balls, my dick instantly hardening. But I refused to let him sway me with desire.

“He told me I’m beautiful,” I lied, wanting to spite him in some small way.

Carson looked up for the first time, meeting my eyes. “You are. That’s probably the first truth he told you.”

My heart stopped for a full minute before I found my tongue again. “Why are you here?”

“I told you. I’m here to show you what it’s like to be on a date with your perfect match.”

“And that’s you?” My voice had risen with my indignation. These games he played with me just weren’t fair.

“Yes, Boytoy. It’s me.” He held my gaze, and the longer he stared, the more it began to sink in. “It’s me, Ryan.”

My jaw dropped open. “You’reCOCKtailCupid? You can’t be!”

“And why not?”

“Because…because…because I need him to be real!”

“I am real. As real as it gets. And it took me hours to come up with that name. It’s good, right?”

I was stunned speechless, mouth gaping, when Carly approached us. “Can I get you two lovebirds something to drink? An appetizer, perhaps?”

“Not now, Carlisle,” Carson grated.

Carlisle's smile widened. “Not going according to plan?”

Carson glared at his twin.

“Please, tell me what’s going on. Why would you do this?” Tears started to gather in my eyes as I felt the pieces of my heart stamped with Carson’s name shatter. “Why would you set me up like this?”

Carlisle moved away, leaving us alone. Carson scooted closer, pulling me onto his lap in the small booth. He wrapped his arms around me, holding me together so my insides didn’t spill across the table.

“Give me a chance to explain. Please, baby.”

“But you lied to me.”

“No, I didn’t. I told you the truth, Ryan. Everything, every one of my answers, was the God’s honest truth. I love the songs you sing, because I love your voice, smooth like honey but with a little high pitch to it. You get this overly dramatic expression on your face when you really get into the songs, and it kills me. I love it.”

I swallowed hard and swiped my wet eyes. Was that true? Is that really what he saw when I sang?

“And I do love baking. Well, I love to eat your baking. And watch you bake, and dirty you up while you’re baking. I’d love to bake with you whenever you want.”

My heart raced. Every word that spilled from his lips gave me hope.

“And if I were to watch your favorite movies alone, I’d probably fall asleep. But watching them with you, while you lay against my chest, warm and soft? Hearing you laugh at your favorite parts? I love those movies, Ryan. You make them bearable. Enjoyable, even.”

My throat was clogging up, and I wanted to cry again, but this time from joy, not pain. I was still in bed, dreaming, and when I woke up, I was going to feel miserable for deceiving myself with false hope.

“And even though I like beer, I love making fruity drinks for you and watching you enjoy them as you discover new favorites. And the same goes for fine cuisine. I prefer a cheeseburger or pizza, but I love watching you eat, and I love knowing you can’t stomach greasy foods and hate veal because it’s baby cows. It took me time to learn those things about you. Time we enjoyed together.”

He turned me sideways so he could look into my face. Carson wiped my eyes dry and placed a soft kiss on my lips. “I love the noises you make when you get turned on. I love the sounds of your snuffly snores when you fall asleep in my lap during a movie. I love how you always ask me to order for you because you trust that I know what you like. And I love that you view everything as an adventure.”
