Someone screamed, and she realised it was her.

There came a guttural snarl. Robbie. Then, he stilled.

Wet heat filled her, the sloppy sound of it mingling with hoarse rasping for air. It was the most sublime moment of her life.

CHAPTERTWELVE

Had he hurt her? Been too rough? The switching had been reasonably restrained. It was, after all, her first such experience. But the fucking…

Robbie tucked his softening cock back within his trousers, then regarded the dishevelled and very thoroughly used woman draped across his table.

Katherine had yet to move. Her exceptionally pretty derriere remained on display, the six vivid crimson stripes glowing bright against her creamy flesh. It was a truly beautiful sight and one he hoped he might see on a regular basis, especially given the effect such treatment had upon the usually demure disposition of his bride-to-be. He had barely dared hope…

“Katherine? Kat…?” He smoothed a tangle of dark curls from her face. “Are ye all right?”

Her eyelids flickered. They opened slightly, to reveal eyes the colour of cornflowers. “That was… That was…” Her words trailed off.

“Do you need water? Buttermilk?”

She shook her head.

“Would ye like me tae assist ye tae your bed? Shall I call for Aggie?”

Again, she shook her head. “I would much prefer if you would assist me to your bed, my lord.”

Ah, yes. His was closer. Robbie shoved his hands beneath her shoulders and eased her up to a standing position, only to be obliged to catch her around the waist when her legs buckled. He swept her up in his arms and carried her through the door to the adjoining bedchamber.

He deposited her gently on his mattress, careful to lay her on her side, facing him. Then he stretched out alongside her.

“Tell me how ye are, sweetheart.”

She cracked open her eyelids again. “You hurt me. Was that not the intention, my lord?”

He detected the hint of a smile across her delicate lips. “Aye,” he replied. “An’ did it work? Are ye now properly contrite?”

She closed her eyes. “I am. I shall not disobey you again.”

“I am glad to hear it, since I only desire to keep ye safe. But all the same, t’would be a pity…”

She reached for him blindly. “That was unexpected,” she began. “I do not know what came over me. I would never—”

He stopped her words by kissing her. “I have already told ye, never apologise for taking pleasure with your husband, Kat.”

“We are not wed yet,” she murmured.

“An’ dinnae irritate your lord wi’ irrelevant details,” he admonished with a soft chuckle. “It will earn ye a spanking every time. We might never get beyond the doors of this chamber again.”

She opened her eyes and looked up at him. “You are no longer angry?”

“No. I was not angry earlier, either. I swore I would never raise my hand tae ye in anger, an’ I meant it.”

“But yesterday…”

“I was angry yesterday, which is why I did not punish you at once. Now, it is over.”

She pushed herself up on one elbow. “It is not. How can it be? Those men are dead. Your people hate me. When I think of that poor woman losing her sons. The widow. The baby…” She shuddered. “I am not sure I will ever dare to leave your chamber.”

He rolled onto his back to stare at the canopy above them. “They are not dead.”
