“Is there somewhere we can contact you if we need to? In an emergency.”

“I don’t… I mean…”

“They can use that number,” Jack whispers. “I’ll pass on any messages.”

I relay the information to the nurse, then end the call. I hand Jack’s phone back to him.

“Thank you.” And I mean it. He didn’t need to do that, and I’ve no idea why he would.

“You’re welcome.” He pockets the device. “I need to go. Remember, you have the buzzer if you need anything.”

I can only nod, blinking back tears until he’s out of the door and the sound of his footsteps disappears.

I’m alone. My mother is going to die alone. It’s all too much.

Jack

I need to go to Caraksay. Ethan has summoned a bunch of us to the island for a conference. He wants to debrief everyone on the recent attack at the mansion. Myself, Rome, Mickey, and Moses have assembled in the front hall.

“Has anyone seen Tony?” I ask, checking who’s here.

“Not this morning. Don’t think he came back last night,” Rome informs me.

I’m instantly on alert. A missing soldier is bad news. “Where did he go yesterday?” I snap.

Rome shrugs. “Just routine stuff, boss.”

“I want him found. Mickey, I need you to—”

“It’s okay, boss. He’s here.” Moses opens the front door just as Tony pulls up outside.

My missing lieutenant exits the vehicle, offers me a cheery wave, and starts up the steps.

“Glad I didn’t miss my lift,” he says, grinning. “Do I have time to change?”

“Fuck, man,” I grumble. “I was just about to send out search parties.”

“My bad,” he replies. “Next time I’ll text if I get a better offer.”

“Do that,” I snarl. “And yes, you’ve got five minutes.” I can already hear the drone of the Caraksay helicopter on its way to pick us up. “A second more and you’re swimming to the island.”

I shade my eyes from the early morning sunshine to watch Megan scramble from the helicopter and jog across the expanse of front lawn.

“Morning,” I greet her. “Doing house calls?”

“Yes. Just checking on my patients. I thought I might as well take advantage of the helicopter since it was coming over anyway.”

The two gunshot casualties from the attack are recovering well, as far as I can see. “They’re both doing fine but complaining like bitches. Have you got anything in your bag to keep them quiet?”

“Sadly not. I was hoping to catch you, though.”

“Oh?”

“Do you have a few minutes now?”

I glance back at the house. There’s no sign of Tony yet. “Yes, probably.”

“I got the results back.”
