“Promise me one thing, though?” I say, giving him a playful smile as I throw the last of the remaining trash in the garbage, and he looks at me expectantly. “If you ever make it to the moon, be sure to give me a wave?”

He lets out a lighthearted chuckle and regards me warmly. “That’s a promise.”

After I finished helpingGrant and listened to him thank me at least twenty times, I quickly made my way through the halls in a rush to meet Lyndsey in the parking lot. As I step outside, I spot Mason standing by his truck talking to Hadley and stop dead in my tracks.

Since when have they ever spoken to each other?

An uneasy feeling prickles along my skin as I watch how they interact with each other. Even though the tension between them is evident by the expressions on their faces, there is also familiarity in how they talk to each other.

Almost like they have spoken before.

“Well, isn’t this interesting,” a mocking voice speaks, making me jump out of my skin, and my head swings to see Lily standing next to me, watching Hadley and Mason with a smug expression.

“What is interesting?” I ask, still recovering from the shock of her creeping up on me unnoticed.

“Mason and Hadley. I didn’t know they were friends.”

I scoff at the ridiculous notion. “They’re not.”

“Stranger things have happened.” Lily eyes me with a smirk. “I wonder what they are talking about?”

There’s an implication to her tone, almost like she is privy to something that I’m not, and an uneasy feeling churns in the pit of my stomach when I think back to that day Lily showed up unannounced and demanded to speak to Mason alone. When I asked him about it, he brushed it off, insisting it was nothing more than the stress of exams. I wasn’t overly convinced, and ever since that day, there has been a change in him.

He’s clingy.

Very clingy.

In fact, he refuses to leave my side and has even started to join me in the cafeteria for lunch, which is something I never thought he would do. He hates the cafeteria. At first, I was happy that he had finally decided to make an effort to spend time with my friends, but I must admit the sudden turnaround has planted seeds of doubt in my mind.

What exactly did he talk to Lily about, and why is he talking to Hadley right now?

Doing my best to mask my apprehension from Lily, I shrug my shoulders in a feeble attempt to act nonchalant. “She is probably just looking for help with the upcoming exams.”

“I honestly can’t imagine why.” Lily taps her chin as if pondering. “Everybody knows that Hadley’s daddy has paid for the best tutors around to help prepare her for finals. Why would she need help from Mason?”

She’s right.

There is absolutely no reason for them to be talking right now.

“You might want to keep an eye on that one.” Lily’s snide comment softly drifts my way, and I turn my attention to her, my whole body growing tense as anger starts to brew.

She is really starting to piss me off.

“Keep an eye on what?”

“Well, it’s obvious that you and Hadley have the same taste in men”—she motions her head toward Mason, and I frown—“and word on the street is that things aren’t exactly working out for her with Logan. Looks to me like she is setting her sights on Mason.”

“There is no way in hell she would have a chance with Mason,” I grind out, my patience with her goading having finally reached its limit.

She arches her brow at me with a sardonic smile. “I’m sure you thought the same thing about Logan, too, right?”

I glance back and see Hadley walking away as Mason gets in his truck. Refusing to let Lily’s comment get under my skin, I give my head a subtle shake. I’m not going to jump to conclusions regardless of what this she-devil beside me is spouting off. I will ask Mason myself later. There must be a good reason why he is talking to my nemesis.

I turn back to Lily, ready to rain hell down upon her when I notice she is already walking away. “I will see you later,Flower,” she singsongs, waving a hand over her shoulder without a backward glance. Chills creep down my spine at the malevolence bleeding from her tone when she used Mason’s endearment on me. The feeling is so acute that the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.

I don’t know what is going on, but something definitely isn’t right.
