“Nothing,” I murmur and start gathering the flowers in bunches and throwing them in the trash. Without another word, Eric helps me, and once they are all disposed of, I pull my books out for the first period.

“Can I talk to her alone for a minute?” I hear Logan speak, and I turn around to face him. Eric gives me a questioning look, and I nod my head to let him know it’s okay.

He gives me a quick kiss on the cheek. “I will catch you after first period, okay?”

“Okay,” I reply, then he walks away.

“How are you feeling?” Logan asks now that we are alone.

I shrug. “I’ve been better.”

“I heard you are going to prom with Eric.”

“Yeah, I am,” I confirm with a nod.

“I would have loved to take you.”

“Logan—”

“Look,” he sighs, running his fingers through his hair, “I know I’m probably the last person you want to talk to right now, but I want you to know I am here for you if you need me.”

“Logan, I—”

“I know.” He nods. “I know I don’t deserve it, but I miss you. I miss you so damn much and just want to be there for you as a friend. Nothing more. I promise.”

“I don’t know,” I murmur, dropping my head and blinking back tears. “I’m just so confused. I don’t know what is real anymore.”

“I am real. I know I have fucked everything up beyond repair, but the bond we have had since we were children is real and will never go away.”

“I just don’t know what to do,” I sob, the tears breaking free and falling down my cheeks. My mind is a mess, and I’ve never felt this lost before in my life. As much as I want to tell him to take a hike, I’m just too damn tired to fight him. I don’t want to fight anymore. I just want to shut myself off from the world. From everyone.

“Shh,” he soothes, pulling me toward him and wrapping his arms around me. “It’s going to be okay. I’ve got you, baby.”

I tense for a moment before giving in and wrapping my arms around his waist, feeling a wave of nostalgia hit me at his familiar scent. I hate to admit it, but I have missed him, and I’ve missed the feel of being wrapped up in his arms.

A hand clamps down on my shoulder and pulls me back. It all happens so fast that it takes a moment for my mind to catch up. Logan is yanked from my embrace and roughly pushed away as a familiar tweed sweater moves in front of me, blocking him from my view.

“I told you to stay away from her,” Mason roars.

Logan closes the distance between them and gets right in his face, eyes wild with rage. “I have more right to be around her than you do, asshole!”

“Like hell you do.”

“What are you going to do about it, huh?” Logan yells, giving him a shove.

“Stop!” I scream at them, but it falls on deaf ears.

“Do you want to find out?” Mason shoves Logan back, and they both snap. Logan charges Mason, tackling him to the ground, sending his glasses flying off his head and skidding across the floor.

“Stop it!” I scream as they roll around on the floor, wrestling. I spot Eric over by his locker, watching them with a stunned expression. “Eric. Do something.”

He snaps out of his stupor and runs over. Mason’s training is definitely giving him the upper hand as he rolls Logan over and pins him to the ground. He cocks his fist, ready to land a blow, and I suck in a breath, bracing myself for the hit when Mr. Cross suddenly appears, grabbing the back of Mason’s sweater and yanking him off Logan.

“Enough!”

Logan scrambles to his feet and, ignoring Mr. Cross, gets ready to charge Mason again. Anticipating his move, Mr. Cross stands between them, holding out his hand to block Logan’s attack.

“I said enough! Both of you to the principal’s office. NOW!” His voice booms and echoes down the hallway. Mason and Logan’s eyes stay locked onto one another, their chests heaving as adrenaline courses through their bodies.
