“Cadence!” Ava barks. “I don’t need a plastic surgeon for my vagina. Fuck… the kid isn’t even out yet. For the love of God, be serious here and search for something else.”

“Okay, okay,” Cadence grumbles. “So, how far apart are your contractions?”

Finally, a normal question, I blow out a breath then answer her, “They are five minutes apart.”

“Okay, good, you still have time to make it to the hospital and…” She trails off for a moment. “Ewww. That is fucking disgusting.”

“What?” Ava’s brows draw in as she looks at the screen.

“Did you know that most women shit themselves when giving birth? What the hell? I thought childbirth was supposed to be a beautiful thing? Oh my god, Ava. Mason is going to see you shit!”

Ava’s eyes go wide as panic sets in, and she looks at me. “Am I going to shit myself?”

Jesus Christ. Why did we call Cadence? I run my fingers through my hair, but before I can answer, Cadence continues to make things worse.

“Yep, according to this website, you are, my lovely friend. And that is something that husband of yours can never unsee.”

“Oh my god,” Ava cries, then grimaces, gripping onto the seat tightly. “Ouch, that really hurts.”

“What hurts?” Cadence asks.

“She’s having another contraction,” I point out, itching to cut this call off before she freaks Ava out any more than she already has.

“F…uck!” Ava cries out, squirming in the seat then sucking in sharp breaths.

“What the fuck is going on?” Cadence screeches.

“I… think I’m dying!” Ava calls out.

“Mason! Do something!” Cadence bellows.

“She’s fine. The contraction will pass in a minute,” I bite back, trying not to kill us as I continue to fight my way through the traffic. This is the longest car ride of my life. Where is this damn hospital?

“Oh my god! I’m going to die!” Ava sinks her fingers into the sides of the seat and grips on for dear life.

“I’m dialing 911.”

“Cadence, you don’t need to dial 911. We are almost there,” I tell her as I turn onto the street that leads to the hospital.

“I’m dying!” Ava cries again.

“Mason, she’s going to die, do something!” Cadence shrieks, breathing heavily. Clearly freaking the fuck out.

“Fuck… this baby is trying to kill me! I’m going to die.”

“You’re not going to die.” I grab her hand, and she squeezes it painfully.

“Don’t you let her die, Mason!” Cadence screams down the phone, “I swear to God, I will hunt your sorry ass down and—”

I tap the screen and disconnect the call. Ava’s hand relaxes in my grip as the contraction subsides, and she breathes out a relieved breath. We pull into the parking lot and quickly finding a space, I put the car into park. Ava breathes through another contraction, and I hold her hand the whole time until it finishes.

Our eyes meet, and the realization that we are going to meet our child for the first time very shortly has emotion bouncing back and forth between us.

“Are you ready, Flower?” I murmur, starting to get choked up already.

“Let’s do this, Superman.” She gives me a warm smile, and my heart melts into a puddle on the car floor.
