“So, Ava. You and Mason, huh?”Chelsea’s voice pipes up from the back seat of Lyndsey’s car as we drive home from school.

“Mason and me what?” I ask, looking over my shoulder at her.

“We heard that you two hung out in the library together today.”

“How on earth do you know this?”

“Well…” she draws out. “Apparently, Hunter and Alexis were making out at the back of the library when they spotted you. Alexis told Summer, then Summer told Grayson, then Grayson—”

“Okay, okay, I get it,” I interrupt her, looking away in a huff. What is the big deal with two students sitting in the library reading together? I don’t understand why it’s even a topic of discussion for the gossip train. “We were just reading together; it wasn’t anything spectacular.”

“Did he talk to you?” She continues to pry.

“A little,” I reply bluntly, not really wanting to get into it.

“I think he’s hot,” Cadence chimes in.

Chelsea snorts. “Really? Mason Reynolds?” she asks incredulously. “But he’s so… weird.”

“He has that whole Clark Kent thing going on. The glasses and the oversized clothing he wears? I bet underneath it all is one sexy ass Superman and the way he came to Ava’s rescue with Logan?” She lets out a long sigh in appreciation. “That is exactly what Superman would do. Ava, I would totally tap that if I were you.”

I roll my eyes. “I’m not going to tap anyone. I just broke up with Logan; I need some time to myself.”

“He could be a lovely distraction,” Cadence singsongs. “Especially if my Superman theory is correct. He could be a very hot distraction.”

“I don’t want to use anyone as a distraction. I couldn’t do that.”

“Well, seeing as we are on the subject of Ava and her potential distractions. There is something I have to tell you, babe,” Lyndsey speaks up from beside me.

“What?”

“Logan has declared you off-limits.”

“What?” I snap.

“Nate told me that he announced it in the boys’ locker room after gym class today, and I quote ‘Any motherfucker who even thinks about asking Ava out will be served his balls for breakfast.’”

“You have got to be kidding me?” I cry, throwing my hands up. “Well, that’s just great! There goes my date for prom, and I can guarantee he won’t be going alone.”

He is un-fucking-believable.

Even though I have no intention of dating right now, no one wants to go to prom solo. I was thinking of hitting Eric up to take me. Seeing as he is gay, we would have just had a fun night with no expectations of anything.

But there is no way he will go with me now. Once Logan lays down the law, that’s it, and I know Eric wouldn’t want to risk causing any problems among the group.

“Sorry, babe.” Lyndsey glances at me sympathetically. “I know it’s ridiculous. Hopefully, he will calm down in a few weeks, then back off.”

“Yeah, hopefully,” I sigh, leaning my head back against the seat and gazing out the window.

“I think you should go with CK,” Cadence blurts out.

I frown, turning my head in her direction. “CK?”

“Mason. CK as in Clark Kent?”

Lyndsey giggles. “Nicknamed the guy already Cadence?”
