“How did you do with that new gear I got for you?” he asks as I combine some kicks with my punches.

“It served its purpose.”

“You are a dark horseman.” He shakes his head. “Never would have picked you to be the type.”

I stop for a moment to catch my breath and wipe the sweat from my brow with the back of my arm. “It was for a friend.”

“Must have been one hell of a friend.” He frowns, and I meet his stare, holding it for a moment.

“She is. She is everything.”

ChapterSeven

AVA

When I open my locker on Monday morning, I notice a pink flower sitting on my books again. I’ve been finding one in my locker every day, and every day I throw it in the trash. Picking it up, I bring it to my nose and inhale the sweet scent. They really are beautiful. It’s just a shame that the person leaving them in here is anything but beautiful.

“Ava.”

My body stills, and I let out an internal groan, instantly recognizing the voice coming from behind me. Turning around, I come face-to-face with Logan whose hands are in his pockets, rocking back and forth on his heels.

“What do you want?” I mutter.

“I’m just wondering how you are?”

“I’m fine, but can you stop leaving flowers in my locker?” I point the flower at him. “Do you really think this is going to change my mind?”

His brows draw in, watching the flower sway back and forth with the jerky movements of my hand. “I haven’t.” He continues to look perplexed for a moment before his expression quickly changes into a scowl. “Who the fuck has been giving you flowers?”

I look at the flower in confusion. “I don’t know. I thought it was you.”

“Motherfuc—” he spits out but is quickly cut off when Chelsea bounds up to us with Cadence trailing not far behind.

“Hey, guys,” she greets cheerily. She glances at Logan, whose jaw is clenched so tight it’s a wonder he hasn’t snapped his teeth. Her eyes dart to mine, raising a brow in question, but then she spots the flower in my hand. “Pretty flower. Did you give that to her, Logan?”

“No, I did not!” he barks, and her head snaps back. Cadence lets out a yawn as if the whole thing is boring her already, and getting a strange feeling like I’m being watched, I look over to see Mason standing by his locker. His eyes are locked onto Logan with blatant contempt, and I almost feel suffocated by the walls of tension surrounding me.

“So, who the fuck is it, Ava?” Logan snaps, startling my attention back to him. Breathing heavily through his nose, I roll my eyes at how ridiculous he is being. He received a lot more than a damn flower from Hadley Miller.

“I told you. I don’t know, and besides, it’s none of your damn business anyway.”

“Everything about you is my business.”

“Not anymore, it isn’t,” I fire back.

“Is there a problem here?” a deep voice speaks, and I spin around to find Mason, standing with his arms crossed and eyes still locked on Logan.

“You have got to be kidding me,” Logan grinds out, balling his fists. “My problem is you, freak. You need to mind your own fucking business.”

“Looks to me like the problem is you, and I do believe she toldyouto mindyourown fucking business.”

If Logan hasn’t snapped his teeth already, with the way he is clenching his jaw, he’s not far from it. “Are you the asshole who has been giving her flowers?” Logan spits, venom bleeding from this tone.

Mason’s lip curls up, and he arches a brow, neither admitting nor denying it, but responding with radio silence. The tension between them reaches a boiling point as he taunts Logan with his silence and mocks him with a smug look. Cadence and Chelsea’s eyes dart back and forth between them like they are watching a tennis match, and spotting Logan’s knuckles turn white, I quickly spring into action.

“Logan, enough!” I step up in front of him and push on his chest. “If someone wants to give me flowers, then there is nothing you can do about it. We aren’t together anymore.”

“Bullshit!”
