He wasn’t lying when he said he was a good listener. He sat the whole time quietly, not interrupting me once, and by the time I had finished, I actually felt lighter.

“I think he’s an idiot,” he says earnestly.

“Yeah, that’s what everyone keeps saying,” I say, failing miserably at withholding the bitterness from my tone.

It is what everyone has been saying, and while I do agree with them, Unfortunately, that so-called idiot still has the power to hurt me.

“He really is,” Mason insists, the genuine sincerity in his tone making me turn to look at him. “If you were mine. No other women in this world would exist to me.”

My heart skips a beat. With the way he is looking at me, his expression solemn and posture unwavering, I know without a doubt he means every word. And something about that makes me feel warm all over.

“I have something that might cheer you up,” he speaks up, breaking the moment and reaching down to his bag. He pulls out a container filled with cookies.

“Are they your mom’s cookies?” I ask, my mouth watering all of a sudden. She seriously makes the best damn cookies I have ever tasted.

“Sure are. Choc chip.” He smiles and opens up the lid so I can grab one out. Grabbing one for himself and closing the top, he places the container to the side, and we sit eating in silence for a moment.

“So what about you?” I ask, finishing off the cookie and eyeing the container. He smirks and pushes it toward me so I can grab out another.

“What about me?”

“Is there a special someone?”

“Maybe,” he teases, flicking me a sidelong glance.

“Who?” I ask, genuinely curious. I’ve never seen him with any girl other than Lily. They spend a lot of time together, and it would make sense for them to perhaps have feelings for each other that they just haven’t acted upon yet.

“I can’t tell you. It’s a secret.”

“Oh, come on,” I practically whine. “What about if I guess?”

He casually shrugs his shoulders and continues to be evasive while nibbling on his cookie.

“Is it Lily?”

He snorts, then lets out a cough, pounding his chest with a fist as he chokes on the cookie. Pulling a bottle of water out of his bag, he takes a big drink to wash it down.

“No,” he finally answers after composing himself. “Why would you ask that?”

“I don’t know.” I shrug. “You spend a lot of time with her, so it would make sense, and she clearly has a crush on you.”

He chuckles, shaking his head. “No, she doesn’t.”

I roll my eyes. Guys are so clueless when it comes to women.

“Yes, she does,” I insist, then pause, trying to stop myself from asking this question, because to be honest, the thought of it makes my jaw tense, but I can’t seem to stop my mouth from blurting it out. “Has anything ever happened between you two?”

“Why are you asking?” His eyes squint with amusement. “Would you be jealous if something had?”

“No!” I respond quickly, trying to sound convincing. But shit, I think maybe I would be. But I have no right to be. We are just friends, and if he has a thing for Lily or anyone else, then as a friend, I should be supportive. Even if the thought of him crushing on someone other than me has my blue eyes blazing a ferocious green.

“Liar.” He gives me a shit-eating grin. “First you come and hang out with me in the library, then you get all jealous over my friend. I think you like me.”

Rolling my eyes, I make an attempt to dismiss his claim. “You’re delusional.”

“You’re not denying it,” he drawls, poking me in the side. “Come on, admit it. You like me, don’t you?”

“I don’t like you right now,” I fire back.
