“Oh my god.” I giggle. “That would be literary porn, alright. Well, you could just skim through the book and go straight to the sex scenes.”

“I tried that with the book you gave me. There were only four sex scenes. It was extremely disappointing.” I roll my eyes and place the flower back in my locker. “So I was thinking. Now that we have finished the English paper, I could really use some help with calculus. I’m pretty shit at integrals, and you are pretty awesome at it, so I was wondering if you would tutor me?”

I turn and give him a knowing look. He’s not shit at integrals. He got stuck on a few equations but no more than anyone else would. Calculus is hard for most people, but he is smart enough to work it out, so I know that’s not why he’s asking.

Now that our English paper is complete, we don’t have an excuse to spend time together anymore, and it would raise too many questions among our peers. Not to mention the gossip mill would run riot with different theories as to why Mason Reynolds and Ava Richards were spending so much time together. And by me tutoring him, it’s giving us that excuse to be seen together without raising too much suspicion.

“Yeah, I think I could do that,” I say, and he gives me that brilliant smile of his.

“Meet you in the library at lunch?”

“I will be there.”

“Looking forward to it,baby.” He sneaks in that last part in a low voice, then flashes me a cheeky wink before strolling over to his locker.

Letting out a contented sigh, I turn to get my books out of my locker when a high-pitched cackle echoes through the halls, instantly making my back stiffen.

Looking in the direction of that ridiculous noise, I spot Hadley strutting toward me with her merry band of bitches trailing behind her. Grabbing my books out then closing the door, I turn to face her just as she stops in front of me.

“Hello, Ava.” She smiles sweetly, but her tone drips with malice.

“Hello, Hadley,” I reply bluntly. “What do you want?”

Placing her hands on her hips, she cocks her head. “I have to hand it to you. You certainly have that whole damsel in distress act down pat, don’t you?”

“And what exactly do you mean by that?”

“Please,” she scoffs, rolling her eyes. “Having Logan take you to the hospital because poor mommy had a little trip? I honestly hope that wasn’t some desperate attempt on your part to get him back.”

My eyebrows rise, and I almost burst out laughing. This bitch has no idea what she is talking about. “You’re kidding, right?”

“No, actually I’m not.” She folds her arms, pinning me with a scathing look.

I let out a derisive snort and shake my head. “Trust me, Hadley. I don’t want him back. He is all yours, sweetheart.”

“Oh, I know that, silly.” She giggles mockingly, waving her hand. “He has been mine for what?…” She taps her chin. “Eight months now? But you already know that, don’t you?”

She arches her brow knowingly, and my hackles rise as I glare back at her. As much as I don’t care that they are fucking now, I do care that they were fucking when Logan and I were together.

The fact that I was played like a fool while Hadley and her friends were no doubt laughing behind my back like a pack of baboons makes my vision go red.

Anger rolls off me in waves as I step toward her. “I wouldn’t get too attached if I were you, Hadley,” I bite back in a condescending tone. “He told me all about your little affair and how you blackmailed him into doing it. He also told me that you mean nothing to him, and you are nothing more than a piece of fun on the side.”

Her face drops, and my lips curl into a smirk as I continue. “He begged me to take him back, you know. He is still begging me. I was his first love. I was his first everything, whereas you are nothing more than a hole to fill. If he can betray me, his childhood sweetheart, who he has genuine feelings for, do you honestly believe he is going to be loyal to you?”

Emotion flickers across her green eyes. She knows I’m right and swallowing hard; she turns to the wide-eyed little minions behind her. “Can you step back, girls? I need some privacy.”

Like the obedient little servants they are, they retreat back a few steps out of earshot, and Hadley turns back to me, her mask firmly back in place.

“Is that what he told you, huh?” she sneers. “If he loved you so much, Ava, then why did he blow you off on your dead brother’s birthday to spend the day with me?”

My heart plummets as every ounce of color drains from my face.

“Did you know it was him that sought me out that day? He practically begged me to come over, and he certainly didn’t need any convincing to spend the day in bed with me. Fucking me over and over again.”

Her words are like knives driving into my chest, which, even though it is now void of my heart, still hurts, nonetheless. I remember that day like it was yesterday. Every year, my mother and I visit Blake’s grave on his birthday, and Logan always comes with us. Last year was the first time he ever bailed on me. He told me he wasn’t feeling well and would stay home. I was disappointed as I always loved having him by my side that day, especially later in the evening when my mother would drown herself in her third bottle of wine.

I hang my head in defeat as Hadley’s smug face continues to stare back at me, gloating with victory.
