“What would be the fun in that?” She smiles sweetly. “But just so you know, if you think you know everything there is to know about Mason Reynolds, you are poorly mistaken.”

“And I’m guessing this is when you inform me that you know him better than me?”

“Absolutely.”

Running my fingers through my hair, I breathe out a weary sigh. I’m really not in the mood for having some kind of bitch pissing contest with her. I couldn’t care less if she thinks she knows him better than me. I’m the one who is in his arms. But if she wants to play that card, I guess I will throw in. “Considering that you have been friends with him for a long time, I have no doubt that you do. So, in that case, I’m sure you are well aware that if he wanted to be with you, he would. But he’s not. He only sees you as a friend, but if you keep this shit up, he won’t even be that.”

“Oh, he will always be my friend. You mark my words on that.” She juts her chin defiantly. “And once you are out of the picture, it will finally give us that chance to become what we should have been from the start.”

I let out a derisive snort. “You really are delusional, you know that?”

“I’m definitely not the one who is delusional here. He will be mine, I can assure you of that.”

“Is that so?” I arch a brow. Her self-assurance on this is astounding, if not comical, but I also can’t deny that it is a little unnerving. “You don’t stand a chance in hell of taking him away from me, Lily.”

“I wouldn’t be so sure of myself if I were you,” she draws out in a condescending tone, making my hackles rise. “Such a naive little princess. You really haven’t got a clue, have you?”

“What the hell are you talking about? A clue about what?”

“There is still one more cat in my bag, Ava.” She bristles, her hazel eyes staring me down. “And when I let that bad boy out, your whole perfect little world is going to come crashing down around you.”

The bathroom suddenly feels warm as I stare at her in stunned silence. Either this girl has finally turned into a full-fledged bunny boiler, or I’m missing something vital here.

What the fuck does she know?

The only skeleton in my closet is my alcoholic mother, and if that got out, while I would be upset, it wouldn’t exactly make my world come crashing down around me.

“W-what the fuck are you talking about?” I finally manage to stammer out.

She pushes off the vanity, straightening her shoulders and casting me a look of indifference. “You will find out soon enough.”

She brushes past me, exiting the bathroom and a chill sweeps down my back at her departure. I have no idea what just happened, and every cylinder in my brain is firing off, trying to comprehend the meaning behind her words. Obviously, she was trying to rattle me, and I must admit it worked. Either she has completely lost her mind or is privy to something I’m not. But the latter doesn’t make sense. I don’t have any scandalous secret that would destroy my life if it got out, and I can’t imagine Mason would either. He is the most honest and straitlaced person I know.

I turn to the mirror and run my fingers through my long locks, then lean against the basin and stare straight into my reflection, inhaling a deep breath.

“She’s just fucking with you, Ava,” I say to myself with conviction, and while the person looking back at me wholeheartedly agrees, I can’t seem to stop the doubt that niggles at the back of my mind.

Lyndsey was right. This week has been a shitstorm of epic proportions. That peaceful Monday morning was nothing more than a lull before Logan launched his next attack. And the attacks on Mason have been relentless. Not only has it come from Logan, but he has also managed to get most of the football team involved.

Every single prank known to man has been tried and tested several times. There hasn’t been a single day that has gone by where Mason’s locker hasn’t been filled with trash. He’s had his books stolen. His clothes were stolen when he was showering after gym class. He’s been tripped, taunted, and teased whenever he makes an appearance in the halls. And it doesn’t matter how many times I corner Logan and rip him a new asshole over it. Nothing I say or do helps. In fact, it just makes things worse.

Mason doesn’t seem bothered by it at all. He takes it all in his stride and shrugs it off like it’s no big deal. But I, on the other hand, am not dealing with it well at all. Every morning I wake up in a constant state of dread and trepidation, worried about what the day will bring and what Mason will have to endure next. He assures me that I am worth it, and he would be willing to go through ten times worse, but knowing exactly how far Logan is willing to go to send him over the edge has shot my anxiety sky high.

The only thing I’m thankful for is that it is finally Friday. The day is over, and we can finally get the hell out of here and have a break.

I’m riding home with Mason today. We are stopping by my house so that I can grab an overnight bag before we head out to the harbor for the weekend.

It honestly can’t come quick enough, and the tension in my body eases slightly at the thought of finally being free from this hellhole. Free from Logan. Free from school and all the bullshit that comes with it.

It will just be Mason and me. Alone and undisturbed, winding down from the stressful week and spending some much-needed time together. In peace.

“Hey, baby.” Mason’s arms wrap around my waist from behind as I place the last of my books in my locker and close the door.

“Hey, Superman.” I lean back into him and let out a contented sigh at the comfort of his warm embrace.

“You ready to go?” he says, nuzzling into my neck and sending tingles down my spine.
