“Oh fuck,” Owen grits out, his movements suddenly becoming erratic as his hips slap against mine at a brutal pace. Then with one final thrust, his whole body shudders as he buries himself to the hilt and exhales a loud groan, flooding me with his hot release.

My body deflates like a balloon, and I drop my head on his shoulder as we both take a moment to catch our breath, the thunder of our heartbeats knocking in unison against each other’s rib cages.

Once our breathing returns to normal, he shifts and pulls himself out of me, stumbling back slightly as he tucks himself back into his pants. I slide off the edge of the sink in a daze, carefully placing my feet on the ground and adjusting my clothes.

Glancing around the kitchen, I take a moment to gather my bearings as the postcoital fog slowly begins to lift. But when I feel the trickle of his release pooling in my panties, the reality of what we just did hits me like a bolt of lightning.

“Oh my god, Owen! We just had sex!”

He sucks in an audible breath and looks at me with wide eyes. “We did?”

I watch as he bites back a smile, and my eyes narrow into slits. “This isn’t funny.”

“I’m not laughing.”

“We didn’t use a condom.”

His smile drops, and the color slowly leaks from his face. “Oh shit, are you on the pill?”

“Yes, I am, but—”

“Well, there’s nothing to worry about then,” he visibly relaxes and shrugs his shoulders as if it’s no big deal.

“You’re kidding, right? How do I know that you—” I pause, waving a hand up and down his body.

“That I what?” He folds his arms across his chest.

“That you don’t have an STD or something?”

“And how do I know that you don’t?” he fires back, arching a brow.

I let out a scoff. “I don’t have any STDs.”

“You do now.”

“What?” I frown, and his face breaks into a sinister grin that has goose bumps erupting all over my skin.

“Now you have chlamydia.”

My jaw drops, and he watches me for a beat before throwing his head back and roaring with laughter.

“Ugh! You’re such an idiot,” I snap and throw my hands up in the air. Storming around the counter, I head straight over to my coat hanging on the wall and rip it off, nearly taking the hook along with it.

“Oh, come on, Mac, don’t be mad, it’s totally curable,” he calls out, the humor singing in his tone, making the muscles in my arms tense as I fight to push them through the long thick sleeves of my coat as I storm toward the exit.

“Stop calling me Mac,” I bark over my shoulder. But before I reach the doors, my feet break out into a tap dance as I stumble over my footing, causing him to laugh even harder.

Managing to save myself from unceremoniously face-planting it to the floor, I straighten my posture and cast him one last murderous glare before pushing through the doors and bolting out of the diner like my ass is on fire.

CHAPTER5

MACKENZIE

“You did what?” Lexi screeches, the piercing shrill of her voice reaching decibels so high that it’s a wonder she hasn’t shattered all the windows and ruptured the eardrums of everyone in the coffee shop.

“Would you keep it down?” I whisper-yell vehemently, glancing around nervously at the inquisitive stares of everyone seated in the café.

With my stomach in a flurry of knots and my sleep-deprived brain currently scattered to the four winds, I texted Lexi this morning for an emergency meeting at The Flying Bean.
