“So, do you believe me now?” she asked.

“I—I have to go,” Victor stuttered. “I need to go see my father and find out what’s going on here. It can’t be true.” She could see in his eyes that he believed her. He just didn’t want what she told him to be true. She didn’t want it to be true either.

“You can’t do that,” she insisted. “If he’s in on it, he might turn you over to my father himself. You don’t know what you’re walking into, Victor.”

“I’ve already told you that I can handle myself, Trish. Thanks for the heads up, but I’ve got things from here,” he said. There was no way that she was going to let Victor go. He’d be walking right into a trap, and she had already stuck her neck out too far for him to go and get himself killed now.

Victor turned his back on her, underestimating her as everyone else did, and she used that as her opportunity to do what had to be done. She grabbed the syringe that she had stowed in her clutch and stuck it into Victor’s neck.

“What the fuck?” he asked, turning on her. His speech was already starting to slur, and Trish knew that if she didn’t get a move on, she’d be dragging his body to her car. That would garner too much-unwanted attention—something that she didn’t need.

“Sorry about that, Vic,” she breathed, “but, you left me no choice.” She pulled his arm around her neck, holding up most of his weight. “God, you’re heavy,” she whispered. Trish walked him out of the men’s room, noting that people were staring at the two of them.

“My friend had a bit too much to drink,” she loudly announced. She walked him past the hostess who politely smiled at her. “Put his bill on Bowie Wrath’s tab,” she said back over her shoulder. The hostess nodded and smiled as Trish left the restaurant with a very disoriented Victor Sloth.

“You can’t do this,” he slurred.

“I have to,” she said, helping him into the passenger side of her car. “They’ll kill you and I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if that happened.” That was the honest truth too. She slammed his door shut and noted that he probably passed out. She just hoped that the tranquilizer she used was the proper dosage and she hadn’t just finished the job for her father.

Trish slid into the driver’s seat and grabbed his wrist, feeling for a pulse. “Oh, thank God” she breathed when she found it. “You’re not dead.” She looked him over, noting how handsome he was up close. His lips were just inches from hers but that wasn’t the first kiss Trish wanted from Victor. Besides, she didn’t have time to sit and admire his looks. No, she was going to have to get them both out of there before anyone knew that either of them was missing. It was her only shot at keeping both herself and Victor alive because now, she was involved in this mess and her father wouldn’t hesitate to order his goons to kill her too. Of that, she was very sure.

Eli

Eli Kingston wasn’t sure if he was making a good decision by taking the job offer from McTavish Industries or not. When his brother, Evan called him to extend the offer from his new business partners, Alex, and Rod McTavish, he thought for sure that he was joking. But he should have known better since his brother never joked around—especially when it came to business.

His brother had bailed him out of more than one mess that he had gotten himself into, and for that reason, he felt as though he owed him. But that wasn’t why he had taken the job. He accepted the job offer because it was the best he’d ever had. They were willing to let him head up the new risk assessment department at McTavish Industries and it came with a hefty salary. How could he say no? He couldn’t, so he took the job offer, after their first meeting, and he wasn’t about to second guess himself—at least not this morning since he was about to walk into the intimidating office building and start his first day.

Luke Tracy met him at the entrance, as promised, and took him back to security to get him signed in. “Your new assistant, Mina Flores is starting today too. Have you met her yet?” Luke asked.

“I have,” he admitted, “at Carrie and Evan’s wedding. She was Carrie’s maid of honor, and I was Evan’s best man, so we were kind of thrown together.” Not that he had any complaints about being tossed together with the raven-haired beauty. Mina was gorgeous and he had to admit, having to walk her down the aisle and dance with her wasn’t a hardship. Eli was just glad that he didn’t follow his gut and ask her out on a date because now, they were going to be working together every day and that would have been awkward, to say the least.

“It was a great day,” Luke said. “It was nice that Carrie’s father stuck around for the wedding.”

“Yeah, he’s a character,” Eli said. Carrie had convinced her father to stick around for the baby to be born, and he agreed. He had practically moved into her, and Evan’s house and Eli loved being invited over to hang out with her dad. “Jack’s a great guy.”

“Well, you’re going to be in training today with Mina, and then, I’ll show you to your office. You’ll be on the fifth floor. It’s where the entire risk assessment team will be housed.”

“Sounds great,” Eli sarcastically said.

Luke chuckled, “Yeah, I guess that being stuck in training all day doesn’t sound very glamorous, but I promise, it gets better.”

“I know, I’m just joking around,” Eli said.

“Sometimes I forget that you and Evan are nothing alike. You guys look so similar, but you have a sense of humor, and your brother—”

“Doesn’t,” Eli finished for him.

“I was going to say that, but as his friend, I didn’t want to sound like an ass,” Luke said.

“As his brother, it’s okay for me to call him names and sound like an ass. It’s expected, really,” Eli teased. “I’ve always liked giving my brother a little bit of hell.”

“And you’ve been so good at it,” Evan said, walking into security. “Hey, man,” he said to Luke, shaking his hand. “How’s it going?”

“Good,” Luke said, “how's things with you and Carrie?”
