“What do you want, Aurora?” Her name from his mouth felt so..intimate to her. What was happening? Did she really like him? She didn’t want to.

“I want you to not be like this! I want you to talk!” She let out a frustrated sigh, her voice notes higher than she wanted it to be.

“Aurora, you were the one who said there couldn’t be anything between us,” Aiden started to say.

Why had she said that?

“And you were right. It can’t work.” Aiden’s face was passive, as if he was talking about the weather, not something important. Aurora’s heart pained a little at his words.

“You changed your mind. You’re always so closed off and guarded.” Aurora couldn’t help as the words came out of her mouth. She wanted to cry.

“Aurora, I have a hard time trusting people. That morning, I think I just said those things because I was sleepy.”

“You were sleepy?!” Aurora’s anger that had only been simmering was about to burst now.

“So you slept with your best friend’s sister only because you were, what, lonely?” She wanted to scream at him but was scared to do so. He was always so intimidating. Even as she said those spiteful words, Aiden’s expression did not change. He remained calm and didn’t act offended even if he was.

“No, I like you and I think you’re beautiful. But I realize now that we can’t be together.” Aurora felt a mixture of his emotions in that moment. He liked her? He thought she was beautiful? But he didn’t want to be with her?

“Why not?”

Aiden sighed, remaining silent. Aurora looked at him, his gray-blue eyes that she found insanely attractive, she realized. They sat in silence for a few minutes. He wasn’t going to say anything. He probably didn’t have a good reason. Aurora was starting to feel more frustrated by the minute. She broke eye contact with Aiden and turned to roll down the windows a little bit. She needed to breathe properly.

“I struggle with commitment, Aurora.”

Aurora looked at Aiden. His expression was different now. She couldn’t pinpoint how but he looked vulnerable. Aiden continued when Aurora didn’t say anything.

“My ex left me at the altar.” He didn’t seem sad about it, but she could tell that it had shaken him.

“Why?”

“She said she wasn’t sure about me anymore. Which is fine, because I didn’t love her either,” Aiden replied.

“But you decided to marry her,” Aurora said, trying to wrap her head around what he had just told her.

“Yes, we were just a good match.”

“I’m sorry,” Aurora said, her anger melting away. She couldn’t imagine what it must have felt like for him to have gone through that. A huge blow to the ego, perhaps. Even if he didn’t love her, he must have cared for her and she broke his trust.

“It’s fine. Whatever.” His mask was back up, his expression unreadable.

Overcome with emotion, Aurora kissed him. She really wanted to feel close to him. She was afraid she was falling in love with him. To her surprise, Aiden wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close to his body and kissed her deeply.

He wanted her too.

Aurora was the first to pull away. She looked down in her lap, not wanting to meet her eyes.

“We should get back.” She said, breathless.

“Aurora.” The way he said her name made her melt. It was filled with emotion. She turned to look at him.

“Maybe we can give this a try. See where it goes.”

Aurora said yes. She knew it would be difficult but for once in her life, she didn’t want to be scared. She wanted to have a shot at happiness. She wanted to feel loved.

Chapter 7:

The week was the happiest and relaxed Aurora had ever been. Aiden and Aurora spent a great deal of time together which was easier to do so since Ethan was away. They took walks on the beach and talked about everything and anything. Not only were they bonding well, she came to realize they had a lot of things in common. From his love for serial killer documentaries to favorite food, there were a lot of things both shared a love for. One of them being books but of course, their tastes were different. Aiden loved to read non-fiction books whereas Aurora had a thing for fantasy and thrillers.
