I throw my hands up in the air. “Fine! Maybe I was avoiding you, but I feel predatory for having asked you out. I picked up on signals that weren’t there. So I’m trying my best to keep my distance to keep from doing anything else as stupid as that.”

She unfolds her arms. “Oh… Well, you shouldn’t feel predatory. The signals were there…”

I look at her, my mind running away with itself. “I don’t understand. If that’s the case, then why did you turn me down and practically run away?”

She takes a deep breath and shrugs. “I guess I just hadn’t been expecting you to ask me out. I panicked. I couldn’t tell you exactly why, but I did. If I were to hazard a guess, I think it has a lot to do with the fact that you are Sophie’s dad and my boss.”

“Oh… I see.”

“But I have been thinking… If you were to ask me out again, I think I would say yes.”

“I’m sorry, are you fucking with me?”

She giggles. “No, I’m not.”

“What happened to the concerns you just raised?”

“Yeah, they’re still there. I do worry about our age gap because what could we possibly have in common? I can’t deny that I am drawn to you, and I would like to see what that’s about.”

I can’t believe she’s saying what I think she’s saying. This is what I have been hoping for over the past few days.

I would be a fool to whiff this opportunity.

I take a step forward. “Emma, would you like to go out to dinner with me?”

She takes in a shaky breath, then says, “Yes, Glen. Yes, I would.”

I smile and I am on cloud nine. “We could wait until the weekend, but if you’re free now I’m game…”

Her eyes go wide. “Right now?”

“Yeah, but if you would rather wait, I’d be fine with that.”

She thinks about it for a second, then speaks. “No, it’s fine. I would love to go to dinner with you right now.”

“Great!”

It’s just as if the gods have been listening to our conversation, because it’s at that moment that the elevator starts back up.

When we get to the basement, we walk out of the elevator and I ask, “Did you drive to work today?”

“No, I didn’t. My car is in the shop. I wanted them to check to make sure that everything is tip-top and replace whatever needs replacing. You know, to avoid a situation like the other night and it’s been there for the past few days.”

“Smart… Well, I’ll drive us then.”

When we get to my car I unlock it and help her into the passenger seat. Then I get behind the wheel and we are off.

“Where are we going?” she asks.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I should have said. I know this really great restaurant. They serve Italian food. Do you like Italian food?”

“Who doesn’t like Italian food?” She chuckles.

I laugh. “I guess you’re right.”

The rest of the drive is silent, but it’s not that long before I’m pulling up toMáron Congress Street.

We both get out of the car. I hand my keys over to the valet and then offer Emma the crook of my arm.
