I am alarmed for a moment and consider calling the cops, but I figure burglars wouldn’t switch on the lights. That, and the fact that I have a top-of-the-line security system, calms me down. I park my car in the garage and make my way into the house.

When I walk into the living room Sophie is on the couch. She is pulling herself into a sitting position and is rubbing sleep from her eyes.

“Where have you been?” she asks.

“And a hello to you too,” I respond.

“Hey.” She stands up, walks over to me and place a kiss on my cheek. “Now, where have you been?”

I chuckle. “I was working late.”

“Avoidant as always.” She returns to the couch.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I join her in the living room and sit in the arm chair across from her.

“Just that you would rather throw yourself into your work than address whatever is going on between you and Emma.”

“Oh, so she told you?”

“Yeah, but not really. She told me something happened between you two, but she didn’t say what.”

“Is that why you’re here?”

“Yeah, it is. You need to fix whatever it is you did, because I can tell you right now you will live to regret it if you let her go.”

“I’m not sure that things can be fixed. Plus, this is probably for the best. She’s too young for me anyway.”

“Oh my God!” Sophie grabs at the roots of her hair and tugs. “What is wrong with the both of you? Even I can see how well-suited you are to each other. I mean, I didn’t in the beginning, but I definitely see it now...” My face remains stoic and I don’t respond. Seeing my lack of reaction, Sophie returns her hands to her lap and sits straighter. “Anyway, you should know that Emma is planning on leaving and going back to California.”

A bolt shoots up my spine. “What?”

Sophie smiles. “I knew that would get your attention… Yeah, she told me just this evening that she’s thinking about heading back because she has nothing here.”

My heart starts to race and Sophie’s smile widens. “That makes no sense,” I say.

“I agree. So what are you going to do about it?” Sophie asks. We sit in silence for a few moments, then she says, “Anyway, my work here is done.”

Sophie and I say our goodbyes, and then she leaves.

I had resolved to keep things ended between Emma and me. However, the news that she may be leaving doesn’t sit well with me.

I’m going to have to put a stop to it.

I think I had the worst night’s sleep that I’ve ever had last night.

It was too late to turn up at Emma’s place or even call, and the news had pushed my brain into overdrive. So sleep eluded me the whole night.

I know Emma isn’t an early riser when she doesn’t have to be. It’s Saturday morning so I’m pretty sure she’s at home. Which is exactly why I’m comfortable pressing the buzzer for her apartment at nine o’clock in the morning.

“Who is it?” Her voice comes through the intercom.

I take a breath before I say, “It’s Glen.”

Nothing happens for a long while. I’m wondering whether she has decided to not let me up when the buzzer sounds and the door clicks open.

I walk into her building and take the steps two at a time until I reach her floor.
