“Don’t be ridiculous. Of course, I will help, and you can forget about it being a loan. I’ll take care of everything financially. Money isn’t something you should be worrying about right now. You should be concentrating on getting better… I’m almost offended that you would offer to pay me back.”

She smiles and her bottom lip starts quivering. “Thank you so much. That’s a heavy weight off my shoulders.”

I nod. “Why did it take you so long to tell me?”

“I didn’t want to bother anyone if there wasn’t any reason to.”

“Bother me? Serena, that’s silly. You should know by now that it wouldn’t have been a bother.”

“I know… I just don’t want anyone fussing over me.”

I think about her words for a moment and they’re quite consistent with who I know Serena to be.

“So I take it you haven’t told Sophie?”

Alarm rises to her eyes. “No, I haven’t, and you can’t tell her.”

“Why not? She would want to know.”

“I know, but it would just worry her. There’s nothing she can do about it. I don’t want her stressed out over this.”

“I get that, but I still think you should tell her. She would want to know.”

“I know… I guess I’m just not ready to tell her yet.”

Normally, I would push back, but I can see she is too delicate for that right now, so I drop it.

After that, we say our goodbyes and she leaves.

Serena has just dropped a grenade in my lap. Although I assured her that everything will be fine, of course there’s no way I can know for sure. In actuality, I’m terrified.

To distract myself from all this, I spent the rest of the day burying myself in work and calling Serena’s hospital to make sure they bill me for all of her treatments moving forward.

This is the least I can do. I hope it will be enough.

Chapter Five

Emma

If I have learned anything about myself over the last two weeks, it’s that I am a master of evasive maneuvers.

I have managed to avoid Glen ever since we got back from Texas. He and I haven’t said one word to each other.

Being the control freak that I have come to know that he is, I had expected that he would at least try and address what happened in that shed. However, he hasn’t.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little disappointed that he hasn’t approached me to talk about it. I wonder whether it has anything to do with the visit his ex-wife paid him just after we got back. I can’t help but wonder if there’s something going on there.

I hate that I know she paid him a visit, but it was all anyone was able to talk about that whole day. Apparently, a lot of people in this company are quite interested in Glen’s love life.

Anyway, my campaign of avoidance against Glen ends now. I have been atMed-Fieldsfor over a month. Today, I am supposed to give my bosses atLight,Med-Fields’board and Glen a briefing on what I have observed, and give suggestions.

I make my way to the conference room, and when I walk in, my eyes zero in on Glen seated at the head of the table. He is as immaculate as ever in a gray pinstripe suit.

He has a severe look on his face. When his eyes land on me, his scowl deepens.

Huh…

“Emma, good,” my boss, Mr. Moore, says. “We all just sat down.”
