Demetrius reached inside the room and pulled the door closed.

You can go. I’ll be fine.

I packed up my things. Might have to leave in a hurry, one way or the other. I fished my phone out of the pouch at the bottom of my bag.

A text.

Not from Sterling.

Sent thirty minutes ago. From Garrett.

I curled a lock of hair around my ear while I read it.

Garrett

D’s plan if he wins is fall back to this motel. Go with that plan, but be ready. Have your phone on.

Winter [GARRETT]

Do you think we’re getting screwed?

Garrett

Do you?

Winter [GARRETT]

50/50

Winter [GARRETT]

I meant what I said.

Garrett

You’ve been held semi-captive for months, so I’m sure you did. Psychological adaptation to survive and minimize trauma. Your mind doesn’t let itself realize that’s what’s happening. Don’t trust your brain when it tells you dumb shit like that. It’s your mind trying to avoid further trauma.

I wasn’t about to fill Garrett in on the details of why I wasn’t so sure I was worth a second dramatic rescue, and that it wasn’t mybraintelling me dumb shit, but historical facts.

Searle and I headed out with Henri and Sarah to the Meeting itself.

The morning was already warm, and the bugs were out and the sun was up, and while a very large crowd had already gathered at the ring where this was being held, it wasn’t as large as I had expected. A number of wolves had been told tonotbe in attendance, and still more had elected to not show up at all, expecting something awful to unfold.

The other details were surreal, and my brain catalogued them all while my mind begged to just turn itself off. I wanted to remember every detail of my mate’s next few hours.
