He said, almost with a growl, “I’ll need identification to let you in.”

Bless his frosty little heart, of course he would.

I produced my driver’s license and my marriage license, since my name had changed from the one my mother would have known. He picked up my ID.

“My hair is dyed. Obviously,” I said darkly.

“I don’t see the resemblance,” he said flatly.

I shoved off my coat, and yanked my sleeve up to expose the obvious silver wound on my arm while my fingers danced on his desk and my skin jumped. “It’s me, I’m back, and I amexactlywho you think I am.”

He leaned back a bit.

Silver wounds were always so shocking. Especially when the owner brandished them.

“You’re going to let me in that room. I will retrieve the box contents, and you will remainveryprofessional. You will tell every wolf in this bank they never saw me. Or I will have words with the CFPB, and you can explainthatto Alan.”

Nothing like the threat of calling down the feds on a werewolf to make them reconsider their life choices.

Cole’s fingers snapped his pencil.

“I do love watching an enforcer unable to enforce a damn thing,” I said sweetly. “The box.Now.”

He shoved out of his chair, lips twitching with growls he barely contained. Some of the unsuspecting humans glanced over, which only enraged him further.

“Temper, temper.” I followed him to the little room around the corner from the main lobby.

“Sign this.” He shoved a clipboard at me. “You reek of MoonDark.”

“Works to throw off wolves who would otherwise wonder why I’m with a human.”

“Why are you with a human?”

“Bodyguard. Comes with the proverbial territory.” I pushed the clipboard into his gut. “And donottell your Alpha I was here. If any of your pack finds out I showed up to take my mother’s safe deposit box, Iwillset the feds on you.”

His expression was full of hatred.

Oh, this tasted delicious. “Must have driven you lot crazy, knowing an Elder Luna had a box here but you couldn’t access it.”

“We’ve been aware of the box,” he said stiffly. “It’s been paid for another eight months.”

“Guess I’m right on time then.” I twirled the key around my finger.

He shoved his key into the lock. It was a large box at the bottom of the rack. I used my key. We turned at the same time. The locks flicked open.

“Out,” I growled. “You’re not getting a look. Find somewhere else to breathe.”

He stormed out to the other side of the glass door.

I yanked the box free. My mom’s scent wafted up in a rush of years. I sagged into it for a moment, relief pouring through me.

Mom, what the hell is going on?

If the scent was this strong, the box hadn’t been opened, despite the temptation.

Inside were three scrolls, tied with blue ribbons.

“Holy shit.” These were official scrolls. Of the earth-shattering variety. Of theI want there to be no misunderstandingvariety. Mom had practically poured a bucket of blue and white wax all over the folds, embedded ribbons, and then smashed her seal into all of it. Then she’d poured yet more wax all over the trio and tied them together and poured more wax onthat, then pressed her paws into the wax before it had hardened completely, leaving her pawprints over all of it.
