“Yes?” I nudged Keon with a knee. “Have I been holding you hostage? Like a cat?”

“I didn’t want to wake you.” Keon’s eyes darted between myself and Akoni.

Akoni burrowed his face in my neck and gave me a nibble. “Did training go well? I will assume the stone drake pleased you if you fell asleep.”

Keon started to shift out from under the blankets and withdrew his arm from under my back. I told Akoni, “I was rewarded for my successes.”

“Tell me about this success. He is a good teacher?”

Keon was now out of bed, having made a skilled and swift exit, probably having executed such exits many times before.

My heart sank.

Akoni’s bi-colored eyes tracked Keon as Keon found his shendyt on the floor. “You don’t have to leave. I will make more tea.”

Keon did not pause in his sashing. “I have some things to take care of back at my place.”

And like that, he slipped through my hands again.

Akoni glared in the general direction of Keon’s last known location.

I sighed. “Don’t start. Donotstart.”

“I said nothing.”

“Stop thinking it, too. You startled him.”

“Startledhim? I live here. He does not.Iwas mildly startled to come home and find him in my bed.”

“You’re angry?” I asked. “Did I screw up? I thought you wouldn’t mind.”

He pushed me down into the blankets. “I am not angry at you. Of course I am not angry with you. I am now angry athim.”

“Akoni.” I sighed.

“I washere. No matter what else, I washere. Call me a hypocrite, but I washerewith you. I placednothingabove you or before you except when you asked me to. I still placenothingbefore your happiness, and I know that dragon is what you want, so I will help you get him. Did I not invite him to stay? Which I did, as graciously as I know how, because I knowyouwanted him to stay. Buthewanted to get away frommemore than he wanted to be with you.”

“Give him some time.”

“It would have cost him nothing but a small effort to stay a few moments, thenleave. I had eight near-consorts before you, and more playmates than that. I knoweverypossible permutation of a dragon extracting themselves from a social situation.”

“We had a very nice time. Don’t spoil it, wish serpent.”

He slid his hand under the sheets, over my hip, and between my still-wet thighs. I gasped and tried to squirm away, but he gripped me tight and purred, “Very nice?”

I whispered, “He told me he’s spent the past century learning how to please human women.”

“Really. Did he learn his lessons well?”

“…I can’t complain.”

“What a low, low standard. Allow me to confirm you have been sufficiently pleasured…”

Ipoked at the little ribbon of magic trailing from my fingertip. It fluttered in an unseen breeze, twisting many shades of white/pink/magenta. The edges frayed, casting off embers that disappeared. It looked like it would be sizzling hot, but it wasverycold, and the air around my hand had dropped at least fifteen degrees.

Party dragon. That was me. Came pre-stocked with my own streamers and confetti.
