“You aren’t a god!” I gasped. “The tethers are the tethers, and today is today!”

A rush of golden lightwhooshedaround us and out, manifesting first as a rush of light, then glittering gold, followed by violet petals.

He yanked me close.

I bathed in thebrightnessof his embrace. Was this what it was like to hug a star? Because he was sosolidand yet barely felt real, all light and warmth and churning.

“Helena,” he whispered. “May I kiss you?”

“Yes.”

Our phones buzzed.

Keon

What happened? Where are you?

Akoni

Are you alright? Where’s Auryn? He’s not at the clinic.

Auryn hada similar flood of pings demanding to know where he was and who was on their way to me.

Auryn

Everything’s fine. She’s fine.

Akoni

I am on my way back. She is not fine.

Helena

I am fine. Everything is fine.

Everything was a bit overwhelming, but everything was also fine. Between the two of us, we managed to talk them down and assure them everything was fine.

The pings did not relent.

Auryn sighed. I did too. Time to head back.

Keon was pacingthe third floor when we arrived back. “Where have you twobeen?”

“Sewers.” I gave him a kiss on the cheek.

“Thesewer—” Keon looked aghast. “Why were you in thesewers?”

“Sewer things.” I sniffed my wrist. Had a bit of that algae smell.

“You werebarefootand barely dressed in a sewer? Auryn, what the fuck?”

Auryn chuckled and clapped Keon on the shoulder. “It wasn’t thesewers. But it was somewhere Mayriel wouldn’t approve of, and we had to go through some culverts.”

Keon glared at Auryn. “Did you two manage to have sex?”

I untied my dress as I headed towards the shower.

“No,” Auryn was saying. “But I wasn’t aware I needed your permission.”
