I set my phone down on the coffee table and tried to clear my head. But a few minutes later, the phone rang. It was Mom.
I tucked my feet up under my ass and shifted my phone in my grip. My Lemurian phone. While I sat… in Lemuria. “Hi, Mom.”
“Hey,” she said. “So….”
“So….”
Awkward pause.
“We want you to come home,” she said.
“Mom, I took a job in Maurlun and it’s not exactly something I can do remote.”
“I meant,” she took a breath, “for a visit. We’re doing a family party sort of reunion thing in June. Kids out of school, before it getstoohot and buggy. Everyone wants to know if you’re coming. I know it might be really short notice.”
No kidding. It was May topside. “Considering there’s one flight off this island a week, yeah, it’s pretty short notice, Mom. Is this where you expect me to say no, can’t make it, and you’re able to honestly tell the family I wasn’t able to?”
“We weren’t going to invite you at all, but the grandparents want to see you.”
“Gee, thanks.”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“You meant you were waiting for me to come groveling at the door. I like my life here, and I’m not apologizing for it.”
