Akoni looked under the table. Then he picked up his tablet to make a note. “I shall look up thisfootsielater. It… doesn’t involve… latex, does it?”

Auryn snorted, and I grinned painfully. “No, I… I hope not…”

“If he asks about feet pics, I’m just going to let you field that one,” Auryn told me.

“You’re the doctor.”

“I already demonstrated how to apply a condom, and why one would use a condom.”

“You… did what? Why?”

“The banana one tastes best,” Akoni commented as he consulted his tablet.

I sputtered something incoherent. “Condoms? Who bought you condoms?! Much less flavored ones?”

“Keon.”

“Keon?”

Auryn chuckled before he stood. “I’m off to the clinic.”

“Hey, wait, don’t abdicate your responsibility here,” I said.

He traced his fingertips over my bare shoulder while giving me his best panty-dropping shit-eating grin before he left in a swirl of formal shendyt while strapping his bands over his biceps as he walked.

“I apparently embarrassed Keon contemplating the sex section of a large store.” Akoni sipped his tea. “I found this rather odd, as the items are apparently very private andnotto be discussed in public, but are there,in public, indicating it’s acceptable to discuss them.”

“I’m not sure if this is better or worse than whatever I was expecting, and I’m not even sure what I was expecting.”

He gave me his most winning smile.

We finished our tea before Akoni headed down to the machine, and I went back to the roost to resume learning to count to ten.

As I entered the front door on the main floor, Mahon was at the table, surveying two tablets with a stylus in one hand. “Ah, you are back, roost-daughter.”

“Were you waiting for me?” I glanced around. No Dekka, and I didn’t sense she was in the roost.

“Yes. We have somewhere to be.”

“We do?”

“We need to go train.”

“I’m training with... you?”

Mahon sighed at me. “I am your roost-father. Who do you think trained your roost-sibs? That they emerged fully formed?”

“Well, no, but...” I’d kind of been left on my own with Auryn and Akoni to this point. Except for the time when I’d fallen through the cosmos and ended up back in North Carolina. Not that that was Mahon or Dekka’s fault. “It’s a long walk out to the fields.”

“I am notdead. I am, at worst, dying.”

“Don’t say that.”

“Little one, Iamdying,” Mahon said with sudden kindness and a thousand years of wisdom in his eyes. “Death from old age isn’t something dragons fear, because it is the natural order of things, and the most ideal outcome any of us can have. Yes, my life has been shortened, but that is the order of thingshere, on Earth, and we’ve come to accept that eight hundred to a thousand years is how long we live here. We’ve had a very long time to align ourselves to that thinking.”

“Well, I haven’t. So if you don’t mind, I’ll worry about you.”

He shrugged. “I can’t stop you. But we are going to the fields today, and you will practice shifting forms and spending time in dragon form.”
