But it didn’tfeellike a lie. “Why didn’t the Usurper Queen fix the Gate when she woke from stasis?”

The storm shifted and tumbled. That is not part of the knowledge forged into me.

Because K’Dol wasn’t a memoir or diary. She was eight semesters of lecture translated into textbook form. “Doyoucontain knowledge of Gates?”

Yes. She had knowledge of Gates from her teacher.

“Was her teacher from Earth?”

No. The Queen and her teacher were born on Homeworld. The Queen came to Earth before being completely molted.

With that came a rush of intense happiness and love—even as echoes, they were like the scent of honeysuckle on a spring breeze. The Queen had hated Homeworld. She’d fled to Earth. And that may have been why she hadn’t opened the Gate. “Could she not open the Gate?”

Very few Chaos dragons are powerful enough to forge or repair Gates. I do contain specific technical knowledge, but I do know the impressions of the Gate information I possess does not contain practical experience.

Sounded like the Queen wasn’t a Gate-capable dragon. Fair enough. Nice to have an easy answer for once. “So can you teach me?”

Swirls while K’Dol considered if this was possible.

No. The technical knowledge I contain is only half of what you require. I cannot convey to you the other half of what makes a grimoire a grimoire. You must consume me for that part.

“And… how do I do that?”

You presume I wish to be consumed.

Great. She’d developed free will. Five thousand years alone would do that to a grimoire. “It was just a question.”

K’Dol twisted and flickered with lightning.

“Will you cease to exist if I consume you?” I asked.

A grimoire is a type of forging. Consuming a grimoire is a type of forging. You will have the knowledge in your mind, and the impression of the words. But I will cease to be an entity. You are a forge-breaker Chaos dragon with three points to your consort lattice. I have no interest in giving myself to one such as you. I will wait for another.

PangeaPandora, reporting for duty. I’d heard all that before. “Do grimoires normally get a say in who consumes them?”

Every time she “said”grimoire, I saw the nine-sided spear, and the spear never had anything to say about it. I was also talking to not the grimoire itself, but the intentions and echoes of the Usurper Queen. And while Lemuria had its official version of events, and its propaganda that the Queen had eaten babies and kicked kittens, the Wyrms knew that the Queen had been motivated by love…while being totally unhinged by that same love. Like down the rabbit holethey’re keeping millions of children in tunnels in eastern Europe to steal their brain juices to keep the lizard illuminati youngunhinged.

I knew the lizard illuminati personally, and they didn’t want or need anyone’s brain-juices.

K’Dol darkened.

You are a forge-breaker from the cradle of the cosmos. Nothing is normal.

“And you’re a grimoire that got stored inside a portal.”

I see we are stating facts.

The Queen had put her grimoire here out of equal parts hope and hatred. That there was afuture, and she would still have a place in it. And hatred, because well, fuck you, fuckers, you’re not erasing all of me.

Consuming the grimoire of the Usurper Queen sounded dodgier than warm gas station sushi. “Human civilization is in danger again, K’Dol. I don’t have time to re-discover anything. I can’t risk a mistake. I’ve got one shot to save it, and I need you to do it.”

K’Dol’s swirling slowed.

Danger from what?

“Dragons. From Homeworld and Lemuria.”

Has humanity fallen to the dragons? You have consorts. You dwell in Lemuria.
