Chapter 14

Tessa

Standing in the far corner of my apartment, back pressed against the wall, I stared at the terrifying, petrifying, horrifying stack of white paper sitting on my table as if it were a curled up rattlesnake that might spring to life and attack me. It was right where Ellis had left it after he’d swung by this morning on his way to work.

I jumped in fright when my cell phone vibrated on the table. Hurrying over to it, I snatched it up.

ELLIS:It’s not a spider, Tessa.

TESSA:I don’t know what you’re talking about.

ELLIS:So you’re going over the script then?

TESSA:Sure.

ELLIS:Tessa Juliet Stewart...

I groaned and my head flopped back. I stared up at the ceiling and sighed.

TESSA: I will.I promise.

ELLIS:Kk. It’s a great opportunity, Tess. And you know it. Pays big-time, too.

I tossed the cell phone onto the couch and rubbed at my eyes. I knew it was. How could I not?

When Ellis had pounded on my door early that morning and shoved the script into my hands, I couldn’t believe it. “You have an audition for this?” I asked him as he placed a cup of coffee in my other hand.

It was a script for one of the most buzzworthy up-and-coming directors. It had awards written all over it. Every actor in town would want to audition for it.

“Nope.” His grin was massive as he poked my nose. “Youdo.”

I stared between him and the script. “What?”

He flung himself on the couch and draped his arms over the back. I couldn’t help but remember that was how Jamie looked when he watched me undress at the strip club. I cleared my throat and tried to keep my cheeks from warming. I walked over and tried to hand the script back to Ellis but he refused to take it, plopping his feet merrily onto my coffee table instead.

“This can’t be right,” I said, dropping it into his lap.

Ellis laughed and tossed it onto the coffee table where I eyed it with suspicion. “It’s right as rain, baby.” Ellis drummed his finger along the couch. “Your audition is in a week.”

“But how?”

“Your boy has some strings.” Ellis winked. “I pulled a few here and there, called in a favor here and there, sold my soul here and there, and voila.”

I narrowed my eyes at him.

“Ellis.”

“Seriously, Tessa. You can do this. Until you fucked up that one audition, you’d been on your way to being noticed. Then you froze, and stayed frozen.”

I opened my mouth to argue with him, but he held up a hand.

“I ran into your agent yesterday. She was at the set to meet one of her other clients, and told me you weren’t answering her calls this week.”

Oopsies. Yeah, I’d been avoiding Rielle’s calls because I knew she was just going to yell at me for backing out of the last audition.
