He looks eager to please. Fresh-faced and serious. “Everyone’s outside. I’ll be getting your bag.”

I know Kieran said we’re leaving, but this guy’s in a rush. “Are we leaving now, like right this moment?”

He nods and heads up the stairs. When he comes back with my bag just a moment later, I’m still standing where I was. “I’d like to get something to eat and drink for the road.”

His expression is one of disbelief. “But the boss is waiting.”

I give him a matter-of-fact look. “You can tell him I’ll be along shortly.”

He hates the idea. “Miss…”

My face says this isn’t open for discussion and he’s staring at my back when I stride into the kitchen.

“Cal? There’s a bunch of stuff on the dining table.”

His boots clomp as he hustles into the room behind me. “Holy shite! I didn’t lose my head before, but my luck might just run out.”

After some exploring, I pull a container of fruit and some juice from the fridge. “What is all that stuff?”

He’s rattled now, and not by what I told him to tell his boss. “I can’t believe this almost got left behind. It’s the stuff from the dead guy’s pockets.”

My stomach clenches, making me question breakfast for a few seconds. “Yuck.”

I don’t think Cal knows what to think of me. He stares at me some more. “It’s just stuff. None of it’s bloody or anything like that.”

“What is that thing?”

He holds up the cylinder I was pointing toward. “A prescription.” He sounds out the drug name. “Says ep-epi-neph-rin.”

Cal extends it to me when I walk over to him.

“What’s that for, you know?” he asks as I look at the label.

“Epinephrine. It’s for allergic reactions. The only reason I know is because one of my sisters has to carry this with her.”

A lightbulb goes off above his head. “Like bee stings?”

I pass the thing back and return to the kitchen where I drop a piece of bread in the toaster. “Yeah. That and food allergies. Why do you ask?”

He’s suddenly very fidgety. “I need to go tell the boss something.”

His expression is so weird, I can’t stop myself from asking, “What?”

But he’s already making double-time to go talk to Kieran.

I yell toward Cal, “Is the dead guy gone now?” But he’s already outside.

I root around in the kitchen some more and pack a go-bag of food. When I walk out with a cup of coffee and my breakfast, there are a bunch of men staring into a black SUV’s open rear doors.

Kieran included.

He’s got his hands on his hips. His head is shaking back and forth. I can see the flexing of his jaw muscles from twenty feet away.

He’s obviously not in any better mood.

When I walk up, they all turn and look at me. “Did I do something?”

Kieran says, “Exactly the opposite. Maybe.”
