The three of us turn to admire the dress where it’s hanging in the corner. Splinters of gold and green light bouncing off the crystals on the elegant fabric. For a moment, we’re all dazzled, then I laugh. “I’m not sure if he’ll see my neck with the way that pushes up my boobs.”

“What boobs?” Ariel teases. She’s the one with the rack.

“Be nice!” I warn. “Eva’s designer worked some kind of magic. I’ll actually have cleavage today.”

“Speaking of Eva, what’s up with her and that guy Ivan you mentioned?”

“We almost had a murder scene back at the hotel and she saved us both. Kieran was about to tear Ivan to pieces. But as for what happened after they left, your guess is as good as mine.”

I check my watch. “But in about ten minutes you can ask her yourself.”

Ariel grins and rubs her hands together. “Ohhh. I can’t wait to hear about their date. I bet that man knows how to lay a romantic kiss on a girl. I mean... he’s surrounded by love-stuff all the time.”

“Love stuff?” Nikki asks with a scrunched nose.

“He’s a florist.” I offer, “A really big, muscular florist with a deliciously sexy accent and eyes that kind of make your girl parts stand up and say hello.”

We dissolve into laughter. For the first time all day, I catch my breath and settle into the moment. This is my crazy life.

“Hand me some of those strawberries. I think you’re right. I’m going to need some extra pep today if I’m going to stand all day in those heels Eva picked out.”

By the time Eva knocks on the door, my hair is freaking awesome. Nikki has done something magical, and finished the up-do with a splash of crystals that match my dress.

“Look at you!” cries Eva as she hustles toward me on her skyscraper heels. She, of course, looks like a million dollars in a tight sheath dress in the darkest of forest green. Her red hair shines like the setting evening sun against her shoulders. No wonder Max is torqued over the woman.

“I’ve never had an up-do before.”

“What?” Nikki shrieks. “Never?”

“Nope. First manicure too.” I hold up my nails. “I somehow managed to keep these mostly unscarred for the wedding.”

Eva hugs me. “Good girl. Now, we have twenty minutes. We need to get you into your pre-wedding sundress, and head to the church.”

My gulp is audible. “Girls, this is happening.”

I’m in a pastel pink sun dress moments later—not the one that Kieran went crazy over in the kitchen, but something more formal in its cut.

“Careful with your hair,” Nikki reminds me with a kiss on the cheek. “When will we see you two?”

My eyes round, my mouth drops open. “Ohmygod, I don’t even know. Kieran’s taking care of all that, I think.”

Eva hooks her arm in mine, “You won’t be disappointed. She’ll be in touch soon, ladies.”

There’s a giant white limo waiting in the circle drive. Cal’s holding the door open for me. His expression is stone serious above the crisp black suit he’s wearing. “Morning, miss.”

“Hello, Cal. Thank you. Where’s Kieran?”

“He left with some of the other guards earlier. He said to make sure you are comfortable.”

I look at the limo. It’s brand new. The inside is wall-to-wall cream leather and gleaming wood with low lights, and a bottle of champagne on ice. There’s a gift bag on the seat with pink tissue foaming out of the top. “I think I will be.”

A man I’ve never seen before that looks like he’s a hundred percent federal agent, carries my dress to the car and lays it gently into the trunk. After closing the trunk, he moves to the driver’s door, with a bulge showing below his coat in the unmistakable shape of a gigantic gun.

Cal closes the door behind Eva and me. The sound unfurls a new wave of nerves inside of me. “Is everything going as planned?”

“Right on schedule,” Eva says as she pulls out a tube of lipstick the color of dark blood. Using a tiny mirror from her purse, she applies it to her curvy lips. With a smack, she turns to look at me with a confident grin. “Ready, chica?”

“As ready as I’ll ever be.”
