FORGOTTEN SOLIDER PREVIEW

COLE STRONG

Eden, Utah

Sometimes you do what’s right because it's what should make sense. Like getting out of the service. Coming home to be near family.

And sometimes you do what's right even though it makes no sense. Taking a job that puts your life back on the line just because you’re good at doing hard things.

The Marine next to me hooks his hands in his back pockets. Silently we stare out over the frozen lake below our perch at the overlook. After a few minutes, he says, “Every man knows when the time has come to get out of Uncle Sam’s service, even when they aren’t done with the work—” He pauses and looks at me, a cocky tilt to the corner of his mouth. “That’s why I knew you’d say yes.”

I shake my head. Well, hell. I knew I’d miss it. But never thought I’dcraveit. I told myself I wouldn’t do this, but I am. Extending my hand, I accept the job offer. “I’m in.”

Marshall raises a hand the size of a baseball mitt toward me. His intense gaze is unwavering. “Welcome to Agile Security and Rescue,Soldier.”

And just like that, I’m back. Back to being ‘Soldier’. It’s a nickname that stuck with me since my early days in the Air Force. Airmen aren’t normally called soldiers, but somehow the nickname stuck.

And I’m back in the dangerous rescue business. Only this time, on civilian terms. A surge of adrenaline rises in me, a familiar sensation. “What next?”

As he backs away, he says, “Come to the house. Meet the team.” My new boss turns and leaves without another word. The tires of his black truck spitting gravel as he tears out of the parking lot.

I blow out a breath.Yeah.My family might have a collective coronary.

It’s one minute to noon when I knock on Marshall’s front door. It’s been years since I’ve been to his home. His reply booms from somewhere inside the mountainside home, “Come in!”

Other voices drift out through the screen. Someone’s in a heated discussion. I follow the sound as they debate something about a computer file. The room falls eerily silent as all eyes swing to me when I step into the kitchen. “Don’t let me interrupt.”

I get the standard once over. I’ve seen it a million times, when warriors check one another out. Sizing each other up. Nothing about it intimidates me because I’m doing it to them.

Marshall says, “Everyone, this is Cole Strong. Newest member of the Agile team.”

The owner of the female voice, a petite blonde with sharp eyes, asks a familiar question. “Just how many of you, Strong Brothers, are there?”

Eden’s a small town, and the Strong brothers are front and center. I hold up a hand with my fingers splayed. In half jest I say, “Five of us. But I’m the meanest.”

She raises a brow, but otherwise, looks unimpressed, as I expected.

Marshall, a lifelong acquaintance, leans back in his chair. “Truth about the mean streak. But he’s also just like his brothers, rock solid, which is why he’s been invited here today.” He nods toward one of the empty chairs at his dining table turned conference table. Agile hasn’t moved into its new headquarters yet.

Marshall Lake’s got big plans for his new company. I like the guy. Maybe because we’re a lot alike. He’s got the finesse of a sledge hammer. I’ve heard I’m the same.

He tosses a folder onto the table in front of me as I take a seat. The label reads Urban Ops Training. At the exact instant the file slaps the table, my phone vibrates in my pocket.

Sixty seconds after the phone quiets, it starts vibrating again.Sheesh. Ignoring it, I focus on the schedule for an upcoming exercise with my new team.
