Then, a moment later, another phone rang. I grabbed it. This time, a patient asked to be scheduled for some time in the next twenty-four hours.

“Let’s see…can I get you in at seven? That’s the only time that we have for the rest of the day and—”

Another phone rang. Jesus, were they trying to kill me? I waited a moment, getting the agreement from the woman before I typed it into the calendar.

I then picked up the phone. “Hi, this is McKenzie with Moore hospital. How may I help—”

A woman screamed at me on the other need, telling me I had taken too long. After apologizing, I found out she had asked to get her medication refilled.

That’s right. This ward was for older people. I guess none of them knew about patience, either.

As I finished with that woman, sending a message to the pharmacy to help take care of that, I looked at the rest of the files.

There was no way in hell I would get anything done with these phones going off the hook. I continued to handle the phones for the next hour of my life. After the fifth call, I thought about quitting on the spot right then and there.

I slumped in the seat, grabbing some water and chugging it.

“They never told me this type of job would be so annoying,” I muttered to myself.

“Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if you did the job right.”

I turned, my eyes widening at the sight in front of me.

Holy shit. It was Aaron Moore—my best friend Emily’s father. I stood up, practically standing at attention. I looked him over, confused as to why he was even there.

Aaron was Emily’s dad, and he was in his late forties. Nevertheless, he was still as attractive as I remembered seeing him.

Back when I spent nights at Emily’s, studying for exams and stuff, I’d see him around. He’d occasionally check up on us, and I always thought he was attractive, but I never got a chance to talk to him.

Now, he was here.

I cocked my head in confusion. “Aaron? What are you doing here?”

I looked at him, and he shook his head.

“They didn’t tell you anything, now did they? They didn’t even tell you who your new boss is, I suppose. Bunch of idiots down there. I should have them all written up,” he muttered.

Damn, someone was mad.

“No…nobody told me anything and—”

“I’m your new boss, McKenzie. I’m going to be the one you report to. I’m the one you’ll speak to directly about any problems. So, if there is anything that you need, please let me know,” he said, his voice cold as he said that.

I wanted to presume he was at least happy he had another person working here but judging from the anger present on his face, he was not very happy about any of this.

“W-will do, sir,” I replied.

He then looked over at the phone, scoffing. “And because you clearly know your way around phones, you tell them to hold for a second, press the hold button, and then handle one thing at a time. And try not to get your head bitten off. I already had one complaint about you.”

The tone of his voice clearly said he didn’t have time for me. Of course, I didn’t expect…this kind of behavior from Emily’s father. Emily mentioned that her dad was kind of a dick, but she never explained why.

Granted, we hadn’t talked much in the last couple of years—nothing against her. But I’d just been busy with college, and we went our ways for the most part.

Still, I didn’t expect to be working under none other than Aaron Moore! He walked away, and I stood there, trying to keep my composure. A couple of patients looked at me as if judging me for the reprimand I had gotten earlier.

I flashed them a fake smile. “Sorry about that, everyone! First day on the job.”

The people sitting in their chairs brushed it off, returning to their books. When the doctor finally took the last of the patients, I sat at the desk, sighing with frustration.
