I should hate this guy. He was cold and rough and insisted on me on the first day of the job. He was a cold son of a bitch, and I couldn’t take being around a guy like that for too long.

And yet, when I woke up and felt his body next to my own, there was a sort of relief that came from this. So, this grumpy man, and also my boss, really wasn’t so bad.

When morning came around, I got up and went to the kitchen. This place was huge! It was the size of my freaking apartment and stocked to the brim with different foods. From luxury goods to even simple staples, this place had it all.

“All right, I’m just trying to look for some bacon and eggs,” I said to myself.

I looked around the place, noticing that, despite having so much, it was not in order whatsoever. Instead, I found foods that shouldn’t be next to one another plopped right together.

That was very odd. But also, at the same time, I understood why that might be. Aaron probably never used this damn place.

I started preparing breakfast, and as the eggs finished cooking and I plopped the bacon in, I heard a groan in the living room, followed by someone rousing.

“Well, looks like he’s finally up,” I told myself.

I watched as Aaron ambled over to the kitchen, looking bleary-eyed and kind of cute. Even at his age, he still had that little bit of wonder there.

He walked over to me, then looked at the kitchen up and down. “What the hell are you doing in here?”

“What does it look like? Cooking, Aaron. You have a whole kitchen you’re grossly underutilizing,” I pointed out.

He looked around, and then he stared at me. “I suppose you’re right. Thank you.”

“Wow, so Aaron is actually thanking me. How sweet,” I replied with a sardonic smile.

“Don’t push your luck. I just appreciate you cooking food for me, that’s all,” he muttered.

I laughed. “You’re so bad at keeping up that grumpy façade, you know.”

“Watch your mouth.”

“And you,” I grabbed the last of the bacon and put it on the plate, “should have something to eat.”

I set it down on the table, and he took a bite. His eyes widened, but then, he nodded.

“Not bad.”

“Thanks. I had to learn somehow. What with mom being gone for a bit and all,” I told him.

The awkward silence that lingered between us became palpable. I sat there and ate next to him.

“You know, Aaron, you’re not that bad,” I told him.

He grunted, but then he dug into his food.

After a bit, he spoke. “You have to go back today?”

“Well, I probably should. My car is at the company, and I need to get a change of clothes at least,” I replied.

“I’ll take you then. After we finish breakfast,” he said.

“My, what a charmer,” I teased.

He turned and glared at me with that trademark look of pure disdain. “I can’t figure out if you like you or utterly hate you, McKenzie. That little mouth of yours is going to get you in trouble one day. Along with that sarcasm.”

Don’t worry. I already knew that.

“Trust me, Aaron. I know,” I replied.
