My daughter.

It was like a mirage. I hadn’t seen her in years. In fact, I thought she all but gave up on me and refused to fix our relationship.

She looked at me with anger in her eyes, her hands balled into fists.

“Em, listen, it’s not what it looks like and—”

“Oh, so you’re going to defend my father’s actions, McKenzie. Figures,” she muttered.

I struggled to keep it together. I was just too shocked to even think straight.

“With all due respect, Emily, what are you doing here?”

She moved near the doorway and then looked at me with a fire of anger that could heat a thousand coals.

“I’m here for a work errand, Dad. I work at one of the cancer facilities nearby and needed some patient records. The gal downstairs helped me, but I wanted to come up and see you. I know it’s been years, but I felt that I needed to. What I didn’t expect was to seethishere,” she said.

I pursed my lips and looked over at McKenzie, who didn’t utter a word. Neither of us knew what to say at this point.

I never thought I’d get caught, much less by my own flesh and blood. I wanted to scream, but I couldn’t.

I had to handle this calmly and collectedly. If I showed too much emotion, things would get worse.

“Emily, it’s not what you think. McKenzie and I are just friends and—”

“Oh, so just friends have their cock halfway up their employees. What the hell, Dad? No wonder mom left your ass. Oh wait, it was because you decided to larp as some kind of biker man,” she muttered.

Damn, those words hurt. I didn’t think Emily had it in her to be that cruel. I tried to figure out what to say, but then McKenzie spoke.

“We’re not doing anything wrong. We’re just friends. He’s my boss, and we’re just—”

“Don’t cover for my dad’s ass, McKenzie. I saw what you two were doing. You were caught in the act. This is disgusting, Father. My best friend? Really?”

It had been a long time since Emily and I had a chance to see one another. I had another question, though. I wanted to ask.

“I thought you were working out in California, not here,” I started.

She flashed me a death glare and then sighed. “I was, but then I took a promotion here. I thought this would be a regular meeting between father and daughter, but I guess not. I just walked in and saw things that I wish I could un-see.”

I knew what she meant.

I shuffled about and threaded my hands through my hair. “McKenzie is a great woman, Emily. I thought that you’d be happy I moved on and—”

“No way. Not with my best friend. I thought that you were better than this, Father. Guess Mom was right when she said that you were a pervert who chased skirts of women that were far too young for you,” she snapped.

“Emily—”

“No, I’d rather forget the images I saw here, Dad,” Emily said.

She turned around and headed out the door. I tried to go after her, but she slammed the door and rushed to the stairwell before I could say another word.

To think, after not seeing my daughter for this long, we had to meet on…these terms.

I sighed as I looked forward. I placed my hands on my temples and sighed. “I fucked up.”

McKenzie walked over and touched my arm. I pulled back for a second but then shook my head.

“No, I was a fool for doing this, McKenzie. I know that we…we like one another, but I shouldn’t have done that. I’m sorry that I made this decision,” I told her.
