“McKenzie, I’m here to tell you that your skills as a receptionist are abysmal,” he started.

Damn, way to dig the knife in deeper.

“I’m sorry, sir. I’m trying to do my best and—”

“And I’m disappointed with your current output, McKenzie. I’m surprised you’re this bad at your job,” he said.

“I’m trying. This is different from the other places where I worked as a receptionist. They were all small clinics, which didn’t see the number of people we do here,” I explained.

Which was true.

I worked only in little clinics, where tracking the people who called was easy. Most of the time, it was a couple of calls an hour, which gave me time to manage everything. Patients used to love me, but hearing this made me wonder if they meant it.

He sighed. “I see. Well, this is a problem. Because I’ve gotten multiple complaints from patients and doctors alike, right now, you’re not performing up to standards, and it would be in my best interests to fire you.”

Fire me? But why! I just started here.

“Please, no! I just started here and—”

“And you’re not performing. You’re on the chopping block to be fired. However, I do have…an opportunity for you. I noticed that you’re very good at medical billing and coding. You have some of the highest in the hospital,” he said.

Did I? I just did that a lot back when I worked at the clinics. It was easy work, especially once you knew the codes and contacted insurance.

“I…I see,” I blurted out, still reeling from the current way things went.

“Which is why I’m willing to extend an opportunity to you, McKenzie. If you’re interested. You’re one of the strongest in this field, and you have a solid work ethic,” he said.

I nodded, listening to him. So, I was good at my job, just not the one I expected to be doing.

It was…shocking. To hear someone praise me like this, thinking I was worth a damn.

“Are you sure?”

‘Yes. I want you to take this. But if you decide not to, I’m sorry, McKenzie, but I’ll have to fire you. The current salary and benefits will stay the same. I’m just going to have you handle all of the coding for the company,” he explained.

So, I was the one in charge of coding, I suppose.

“Do I work at the reception desk or?”

“I have a proposal. I would like you to work with me in my office. I do want to keep an eye on you since you’re very good at this, and I would like to make sure that all of the claims come back clear,” he said.

My eyes widened. I’d be working right under the head honcho himself. In a way, which excited me, but I also knew I couldn’t get too keen about this.

“I see.”

I didn’t know if I should be excited to work right under Aaron, especially given the current track record of things. I mean, was it a good idea to be excited about this? Or was it a wrong move waiting to happen?

I didn’t know for sure, but the stare Aaron gave me, that look of pure disdain that enveloped his face, told me one thing.

He was serious, and I should take the offer if I wanted to stay here.

“All right. I’ll accept it. I’ll work on this new project.”

His lips curled into that of a smile as he stood up, extending his hand. “Good, McKenzie. Let’s see how you apply yourself.”

I nodded. The way he stared at me made me feel warm. I liked it, and it made me feel a strange semblance of power as I looked back at him.

“Hope you’re ready because I’m here to deliver.”
