“No, this is it. It’s not up for debate. I won’t have any other dress.” I smile at my reflection as I hear Will stand up from the couch and march over to my dressing room door.

“Fine, just let me see it.” He repeats again, his tone impatient.

“No, I think I will surprise you.” I say as the attendant giggles with me.

“Hannah.” The one word is a demand that I open the door and let him see.

“Will.” I’m not afraid to match his stubbornness.

“Fine. You get your way, but if I show up with a date that looks like the Bayou prom queen, I will make the rest of our trip hell for you.” With that, I hear him march back to the couch and plop down.

“Deal.” I say happily and give an excited twirl before having the attendant unzip me.

The attendant puts the dress into a dress bag and then takes us to checkout. She had me try it on with some nude heeled sandals, which Will insists on getting too. I purposely preoccupy myself with a sparkly dress as he checks out, so I don’t have to see the final bill.

Dress bag in hand, we head back to the hotel to get ready. As we separate to go to our rooms, I can’t help the giddy energy that bubbles within me. I’m going to make Will eat that “bayou prom queen” comment.

Chapter 14

After a long shower, where I meticulously exfoliate and shave my legs, I get to work. I don’t plan on doing much in terms of makeup. I want to look like myself, not one of Will’s country club groupie clones, but I still touch up my curls with a curling iron before piling my hair into a low messy, but classy bun, with several loose strands of hair to frame my face. For makeup, I keep to the basics but add a little wing to my eyeliner to make my eyes pop.

By the time I slip into the dress and size myself up in the mirror, I can’t help but smile. These trust fund babies won’t know what hit them, Will included. Even though I’m ready before the time I said I’d meet Will in the lobby, I wait a couple of minutes. I want my moment on the stairs where he looks up and I get to capture his whole reaction. Typical, I know.

Five minutes later, I make my way to the lobby. Of course, when I get there, Will is not even looking my way. He is in a chair, completely absorbed in his phone. So much for my grand entrance.

My phone buzzes with a text.

Will:Where are you?

Me:Look up.

Will stands and turns around. He goes perfectly still as his gaze settles on me. His eyes are locked on me when a playful smirk pulls at his lips, and he turns around again and sits down. He pulls out his phone and though I can only see the back of his head, I can feel his smile.

My phone buzzes again.

Will:Typical.

I make my way down the stairs and stop in front of his chair. As I do so, I get a better look at him. His suit is perfectly fitted, showing off all that work he puts in at the gym. I love that his hair is as messy as any day, rather than styled for the occasion. It feels more Will when it looks like he just ran his hand through it.

“It is a good thing you turned around before I walked down the stairs. It would have really ruined the vibe I was going for if you saw how uncoordinated I am in these heels.” I demonstrate said clumsiness with yet another stumble, but Will is quick to steady me with a hand at my elbow.

“The way you look in that dress, I don’t think anyone will notice if you fall down the stairs.” Will gives my dress another appreciative glance.

“And how do I look in this dress, Will?” I look him in the eyes, boldly issuing a silent challenge.

“Like you are going to give my ex an aneurysm on her wedding day.” He holds my gaze and the heat in his eyes fills me with the desire to grab his lapels and kiss him.

“I’m not coming to ruin anyone’s wedding. I’m moral support only.” I say truthfully. My only goal is for Will to have a good time.

“Doesn’t matter. You will drive her mad, anyway.” He chuckles at some inside knowledge and a burning curiosity fills me.

“Why is that? Not to be rude, but she cheated on you. I figured she wouldn’t care who you showed up with.” My words are blunt, but they don’t seem to bug Will.

“If I had brought any other date, she probably wouldn’t have, but you happen to look like a girl that she was always accusing me of being into when we were together.” He brushes a piece of hair out of my eyes and when my breath catches, he gives me a devilish wink.

“You are devious.” I slap at his chest and take a step back. Being that close to him is dangerous.

“I am. Come on, the car is out front.” He offers me his arm and I gladly loop my arm through his. I need all the extra stability I can get in these hills.
