Abel turns to see a figure in the shadows near the back of the room and his stomach drops.

Fuck.

“What the fuck do you want, Reid?”

The blonde Alpha steps out into the fluorescent light, his scarred lips pulling into a smirk. “Thinking about busting out of here, huh?”

He doesn’t know how much the psychopath heard, but he’s not about to give him any ammunition. Ofcourse, outof anyone listening in, it had to be the resident maniac who’s spent more time in solitary than anyone else.

“Mind your fucking business.”

“Ouch, touchy,” Reid replies, the smirk never leaving his face. He steps onto the training mat and meets Abel’s gaze. “Maybe I’m on your side in this.”

“You’re never on anyone’s side. I doubt you even know what the fuck you’re talking about.”

Reid huffs, but still keeps the amused expression on his face. “I have more influence than you think. If you’re serious about this, I can help.”

But before he can ask any more questions, Reid disappears into the shadows.

That night when Abel is back in his bunk, he notices an envelope under his pillow, placed there courtesy of Reid.

Inside are documents that confirm every fear Abel has ever had.

Just as he suspected, they’ve been lied to.

Alphas are meant to be with Omegas, not kept from them.

CHAPTER 7

HAZEL

The suppressants don’t work as wellas she hoped.

For the next week, she spirals and obsesses about that forbidden place.

She meets Ava for coffee, she goes on job interviews, and she does everything she can think of to keep the traitorous thoughts from her mind. The awful feeling that something iswrongstays at the forefront of her brain, no matter how hard she tries to shove it away.

She calls her doctor and explains her situation the best she can while leaving out the part where she trespassed on private property and put her life at risk.

The doctor ups her dose of suppressants, but it only makes her float in a haze. The loneliness is still there, although now it’s an afterthought, and she can shove it far away, deep inside herself.

Still, the thoughts remain.

Finally, she turns to the internet.

It takes digging and bypassing numerous warnings regarding unsecure connections before she finds excerpts from Canadian medical journals.

It’s interesting, to say the least.

Presented with facts instead of just fear, dread creeps up Hazel’s spine.

Once upon a time, Alphas and Omegas weren’t separated as they are now.

Instead, they pursued one another and mated for life in an unbreakable bond that scientists still have trouble explaining.

She scratches at the gland on her skin, the one that shrinks and almost fades away when she takes her suppressants faithfully.

She wants to call Ava and show her the articles. Maybe then Ava would take her seriously.
