But it’s hard to feel anything but hopeless when she’s lost those she cares about.

Mindy’s cellphone rings early in the evening and her eyes widen in disbelief as she answers it.

Audrey gives her a dumbfounded look until Mindy hangs up the phone andsqueals.

“There are no charges!” she yells. “Audrey, your old bosschanged her statement.”

Hope, something she hasn’t experienced in weeks, starts to grow in Audrey’s chest. “What?” Audrey gasps. “Are you sure?”

“Yes! The detective just called and said there was a mistake. Your bitch of a boss said she didn’t recognize you and there was a misunderstanding.”

Audrey shakes her head. “That doesn’t make sense. She wouldn’t do that.”

Tabitha will always look out for herself first—her boss wouldn’t suddenly reconsider.

Unless Julian was involved, a small voice inside her whispers.

But how could he be? He’s been silent for weeks.

She doesn’t even know if he’s still alive.

You don’t even know if Pearl’s alive…

She can’t mirror Mindy’s excitement, no matter how hard she tries.

“It’s going to be okay,” her sister says softly. “I know I sound like a broken record, but things are looking up. And we’re going to find Pearl. Wewill.I’ll go back to the beach tomorrow and hand out flyers.”

Audrey nods, the spark of hope flickering and fading in her chest.

She wants to believe Mindy, but it’s difficult. Now that she can’t shove every emotion down, her world looks bleak.

But she’ll try, though.

She’ll try for Mindy and Pearl.

And maybe Julian, too.

AUDREY

Mindy leaves for the day, determined to bring Pearl back to Audrey.

Audrey wishes she could go with her, but with the ankle monitor, she’s stuck in her sister’s house, alone with her thoughts.

Usually, there would be the familiar chirp of a cat, but she’s left in complete silence.

She turns on the television and her heart sinks as the news confirms her worst fears.
