Whoever leaked the documents possibly changed the future of the country.

The Betas, Audrey included, messed up, and they messed upbadly.

Alphas by nature are stronger, faster, and more powerful than Betas, but they aren’t necessarilydangerous.

Her schoolbooks lied.

Prohibiting the bonds between Omegas and their mates is an unconscionable decision.

They should never have been kept apart. Alphas could have easily integrated into normal society, and Omegas didn’t need to stay confined to specialized cities to supply their scents.

Audrey spirals for days.

Tabitha told her that the laws made sense any time Audrey questioned them.

But Audrey is twenty-four years old. She should have been asking more questions, not just recording information about Omegas’ scents.

Her work proved pointless in the long run, because all that research and more was already in the leaked documents that had been plastered all over the internet.

She should call Mindy. She hasn’t texted her sister in five days, and Mindy is the only one Audrey can even talk to now. Because of the NDA Audrey signed, not even her coworkers have bothered to reach out to her.

Mindy would know what to do.

Clunk.

Her purse clatters to the floor, thanks to Pearl. Since Audrey’s been home, the petite bundle of black fur has been a constant companion, purring on her chest regularly and kneading happily on the bed.

And now, apparently, she’s an expert at destruction.

Audrey drags herself off the couch and walks over to the kitchen where the purse has fallen off the dining room table.

Her keys have spilled out, along with her wallet and…

The key card from the lab.

She forgot she had taken it home in her final act of rebellion against Tabitha. As she stares at the simple piece of plastic, a chill runs down her spine. She slowly picks up the sleek white card and holds it in her hand, turning it over to stare at the magnetic stripe.

She chews the inside of her cheek, and a thought comes to her mind.

Would it still work?

Surely, they must have deactivated it by now.

Right?

Still, she flips the key card over in her fingers with the question looming in her mind.

Her notes are probably still there. All her hard work, her years of putting in sleepless nights just for the sake of her research is sitting in a filing cabinet, slowly collecting dust.

She wants her notes back.

It would be stupid to go, of course. The government has shut down all research facilities in the state, according to the broadcasts.

Still, there’s a chance.

Pearl delicately paws at Audrey’s hand, careful not to let her claws sink into her owner’s skin.

“I deserve my research back,” Audrey tells her cat. “All that work paid for your organic food over the years.”
